The hitch I am referring to is a Curt from a 2000 to a 2003 xterra. Why is it necessary to change hardware?

Yes, a hitch from a 2000 Nissan Xterra would also fit a 2003 Nissan Xterra. For example the Draw Tite Hitch part # 75107 that you referenced would fit either year.

Hitch hardware is considered one-time-use so you would need new hardware if you plan to move a hitch from one vehicle to another. For that you would need part # RHK. On the product page you would need to enter the part number and hitch manufacturer info you need.

The install hardware for hitches is considered "torque to yield" which means that since the bolts stretch slightly when torqued all the way they are only designed to be torqued once. It's a warranty thing that we have to recommend. Look at the threads of your hitch hardware. You should see that some of the threads are thinner in the middle like in the picture I attached. That's what happens with a torque to yield bolt.
