Will Trailer Sway Increase when Using a Sidewinder Pin Box on a 5th Wheel Trailer

Updated 01/04/2016 | Published 01/01/2016

Question:

What are the towing characteristics of the Reese Sidewinder pin box in regards to sway in various tow situations compared to pin boxes that pivot on the hitch directly above the truck axle, i.e. wind, speed, weight, etcetera?

Expert Reply:

Because a Sidewinder pin box such as # RP61410 moves the pivot point of the trailer back 22 inches the increased distance could make the trailer more susceptible to sway. With the proper pin weight specified by the trailer manufacturer and the trailer level and not angled up at the front, you will be less likely to experience sway.

Wind resistance and various speeds will not increase or decrease the likelihood of sway when using a Sidewinder versus a regular pin box. I have included a link to our informational article on Sidewinders for you.
