Updated 12/15/2015 | Published 12/14/2015

Question:

I have a big tex CH70 car trailer, 16 ft long. I am interesting in purchasing a winch for this trailer. My ramps are 48 inches long with a rise of 15 inches. I would use in case of a breakdown for my military jeep, it weighs 2400-2600 pounds It is a rolling load. Could you steer me in the right direction as to which winch would be best. thank you

Expert Reply:

The best type of hand winch for your car trailer application is a brake winch. These provide a self-locking holding action to prevent a runaway load. Their planetary gears deliver easy and efficient cranking. A good option is the Fulton High Performance Hand Winch # F143100. This is rated for 1500-lbs, but it will be fine for your rolling load.

If you prefer a heavier-duty winch consider the 2K-rated Dutton-Lainson # DL11001 and the cable/hook part # DL24100.

Any winch must be installed so that it's entire bottom surface makes contact with the mounting area. This is essential in order for the winch to deliver it's full pulling capacity.
