Question:
I have a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. It already has the 7 pole connector installed on rear of truck. Due to the fact there was two previous owners prior to me I am not real sure about the 7 way, however I believe it to be factory because it is mounted by the license plate. I purchased the Tekonsha IQ P2 brake controller. If these numbers help on the brake controller okay. #1Q2A1512308 and on a little white tag where the connector plugs in to the controller is N26802. The parts store said to wire the plug that I purchased that goes in to the connector on the truck connector on truck under dash is blue and to the controller color for color on the four wires. I done that but it appears that the controller does not work. Other specs that I have seen say that the color to color for the controller to the plug under the dash on my truck may not be exact color to color. Can you help with this as far as a schematic of what colors to connect together for this controller and truck connector? Thanks a bunch.

If you purchased the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter, # 3020-S, for your 2007 Dodge Ram, then it will wire color for color with the wires for the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller, # TK90160. If you have a different brand of adapter, you can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, to test the wires for function. The ground wire is typically white and will connect with the white wire on the controller. The wire with constant 12V power (if you don't have a wire with constant power, you could be missing a fuse or relay) will connect to the black wire on the controller. The wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed will connect to the red wire on the controller and the remaining wire, typically blue, is the brake output wire and will connect to the blue wire on the controller.
If your controller still isn't working there is a possibility that when the 7-way controller was installed, not all of the wiring was run. To determine if this is the case, using the circuit tester I would start by testing the blue wire coming out of the controller. If the blue wire has power, move on to testing the the 7-way's brake output pin (5 o'clock position) when the manual override on the controller is used. If there is no power, this means that the wiring is not complete and you will need to run an additional wire.
Usually located under the driver's side of the vehicle, right behind the front wheel well is a wire connector. Using the circuit tester, locate the wire that has power when you push the controller's manual override lever. This wire is typically blue. Using a quick-splice connector, # SWC501915-1, run a wire, # 10-1-1, from the blue wire in the connector to the back of your 7-way and connect to the brake output pin. I have attached an article which covers this.
