I checked the owners manual for the 2003 Ford Explorer. For a 4.0 liter with the 3.55 rear end the maximum gross trailer weight is 3,300 pounds, with the 3.73 rear end it is 3,500 pounds. And if it had the factory tow package and Class III, 2 inch trailer hitch the max would be 5,820 pounds. Consult your owners manual to confirm.
