According to Reese, their obsolete # 37042 multi-fit hitch wasn't a fit for the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They do not under any circumstances recommend modifying or altering the hitch to fit because doing so would have an unforeseen effect on its weight bearing capacity. Using a hitch with an unknown capacity could lead to a dangerous situation.
I'd highly recommend going with a hitch that's custom designed for your Grand Cherokee like the Curt Class III hitch, part # 13051.
