Should the black plastic caps be left on for instalation? on the video it looked like it was left on only on one side.

The black plastic caps on the ends of the Dee Zee Nerf Bars # DZ372253 remain in place on the tube for installation. The linked installation video shows the front end of the step at the 3:34 minute mark with the cap in place. The editing of the video for the rear portion simply omitted the view of the rear cap.
