When I push the brake on my truck the light on the brake box goes off what is wrong

It sounds like there is power interruption when you are stepping on the brake pedal. this could be due to an overload situation or a short. You didn't mention the year, make, and model of the truck so if the controller is hardwired in then it is possible that the red wire is not connected to the right brake wire switch. You need the one that only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed and not at any other time (such as with the head lights or turn signals on). It could be a loose connection on that red wire as well.
There also might not be a sufficient ground. The best place to ground the white wire is the negative battery terminal. No other ground will work as well.
