I contacted my technical associates at Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch and Curt to find out why the M Model version of the X5 is listed as a no-fit for a hitch. This particular install is fairly involved - the bumper must be temporarily removed, tow hooks must be permanently removed and there is significant ("noticeable") trimming of the rear fascia required. For these reasons some hitch makers made the determination that the vehicle simply requires too much modification to install a hitch without unreasonable difficulty and that owner's of such a premium vehicle would not want to make these modifications.

Curt does have a confirmed fit with their Class III hitch # 13077. This hitch offers a 600-lb tongue weight (TW) rating and a 6000-lb towing capacity. My technical contact at Curt confirmed the fit of this hitch on your X5 M model. The linked install video shows this item being installed on a 2008 X5.

Further research by the folks at Draw-Tite revealed that their hitch # 75600, is also confirmed to fit subject to the same caution noted above.
