Updated 02/16/2015 | Published 02/15/2015

Question:

Want to pair up our 2014 4Runner V6 with Lance 1575 trailer GVWR 3500 pounds. 4Runner rated at 4700 pounds towing capacity, has factory towing package, even plug for brake controller. Want a perfect set up. Besides brake controller recommendation? what WD hitch and sway control should I buy? Your info on this site far exceeds that available from RV seller And Toyota. Thanks for that.

The first thing you are going to want to do is make sure your 2-14 Toyota 4Runner and its trailer hitch are both rated for use with weight distribution. This information for the vehicle should be in the owners manual. The hitch might have a sticker that states it capacity when used with weight distribution.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight but sometimes more. For a trailer that grosses 3500 pounds that would make its tongue weight 350 to 500 pounds. Pro Series system # 49570 would be rated too high and you would have a very stiff ride and it would not be very effective.

Instead you can use Pro Series system # PS49901 which is rated up to 550 pounds. I have linked a video review for you. This system also comes with a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. If a 2 inch ball is needed you would need # A-90. I have included some additional helpful links for you.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. You will also need wiring harness # 3040-P to complete the installation.
