Strait Line Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a Travel Trailer that Weighs 3,800 lbs
Published 01/07/2015 >
Question:
Hello. I got the following item for my 3800lb 21foot TT as a friend of mine with raving experience suggested. Details Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW 1 As I did my own research I realized the item I have got probably is an overkill for my TT. Is this system too much and unnecessary for my TT. I appreciate your time and professional comment.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.
Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight of the trailer. So for a 3,800 lb trailer you would most likely have a tongue weight of between 380 lbs and 570. So yes, the Strait Line System part # RP66084 that you referenced would be overkill.
For a similar rated system that would work well with your tongue weight range I would recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66082. This system has a range of 200-600 lbs so your tongue weight should fit perfectly with this system. This system also features the dual cam sway control system that fights to prevent sway before it starts.
