From what I was able to find with my research you'll need to look closely underneath the glove box, which is a fairly common location for most vehicles. There is a black plastic cover mounted on the rear. You'll want to remove the five Phillips-head screws from the cover and pull the cover down to remove it.

According to my research the PTC Custom Fit Cabin Air Filter # 3513661 measures 6-1/4" x 6-3/4". I don't have the specs of the fan box on your 2001 Ford Ranger, but if you're able to access it you can check these dimensions to see if you have that room.
