When you set a van window into the opening, any small gap between the frame and the body panel becomes a path for water and air. This foam seal tape compresses as the frame tightens, filling those gaps and creating a consistent weather seal.
When you tighten a window frame against the van wall, the metal isn't perfectly flat. There are always slight high and low spots, and those are the places water will try to get in. This foam tape goes around the frame before you set the window. As you tighten everything down, it compresses into those small gaps and seals them off. That's what keeps water from working its way inside your van so the seal stays tight around the frame.
I ordered the tape for the awning window, not realizing that mounting tape came with the window. I'll be using the tap for other purposes.
