The shear strength is determined by placing the locking pin in a stress position and subjecting it to increasing force until a required proof load (maximum force received without deformity) is met or the pin fails. The lock only works when I leave the key out slightly, the first lock I recieved the key would not work at all, the second I have to not push the key in all the way and it unlocks. You were quick to send me a new lock then. On the second one I emailed and no response at all.
Got this lock for my Gen-Y Hitch, pretty easy to use, so far it has worked well. Customer service and shipping with etrailer was great and received my lock within 4 days. Thanks, etrailer!
This seems like a decent lock but is very ineffective. I had a friend come by and borrow my trailer and didn't know that the lock was on and he was able to hook on to the trailer and pull away with it. it just bent the small thin bar that goes through the hitch. Again the lock is a good quality stainless steel lock but when locked to coupler you can still pull back the red latch enough to drop it down over your ball and re-latch it. So it doesn't not do what it was designed to do. I would not buy another one and I do not recommend it. You will just be wasting your money.

Not very good. A few months after getting it, I accidentally hooked up the trailer to the truck with this in place and it just bend the lock and still hooked up.
