BOLT Locks for Convenience and Security

Are you tired of carrying a bulky ring of keys - for your hitch lock and coupler lock, your pickup cover or trailer door, and all the various padlocks securing your equipment? Tired of fumbling for the right key or having to replace a lost key?

BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology) has solved that problem by designing a line of locks that can operate with a key you already have handy - your vehicle ignition key.

When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position.

BOLT is particularly useful in commercial applications. Imagine being able to send a crew without having to sign out multiple keys for a work truck, trailer, hitch pins, and equipment locks. With BOLT, the vehicle key becomes a master key. It opens all those locks and you no longer have the hassle of getting to a work site only to find that you've brought the wrong keys.

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bolt line of padlocks. These are designed to be keyed exactly to your vehicle's ignition, so you're always going to have the right key with you. Available for Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan several different manufacturers. It's a very simple operation, here on the bottom you're going to have a small cover that needs to be removed. You can do it by hand, it's a pretty simple process, just pull that off. That exposes our lock core, We'll then take our vehicles ignition key, place it in, we want to turn it all the way over until we feel it stop. As you can see that's unlocked our lock for us, now any time we go to us it, ignition key goes in, you're able to unlock it.

This is going to be great for securing trailer couplers, securing items to your trailer or even like farm gates or something. You're always going to have your truck when you go to your farm so it's nice that you won't forget the key, you're always going to have it there with you. They use a hardened chrome plated shackle here, it measure 2 inches tall in usable space. It's going to have a 5/16 inch diameter on it. As you can see we've got a hardened rubber coating, all the way around the lock, that's going to protect it for us. They use an automotive grade tumbler, it's got a 6 plate design, so it's going to resist any kind of tampering we might encounter.

It's kind of hard to see but inside we do have a stainless steel shutter. That protects the dirt, debris and moisture from getting into our cast zinc cylinder. We're going to have superior corrosion resistance. They have made these in the United States and they offer a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over all the features of our lock let's show you how it looks in action.

Here on our generator we're going to secure it, just with a length of chain. Run that right around where we need that to be used. It's a simple process of coarse we'll unlock our lock, go through our chain, really with that extended we could bring our excess up and secure that off as well. There's a lot of good working room on there so you won't have to worry about securing that chain. You see nice and secure, ready to head down the road, park our trailer and we're not going to have to worry about somebody getting our generator. Now that we've had a good look at it and seen how it works that will complete today's look at the Bolt Line of Padlocks.

Still works great.

I bought 3 and all have lasted a year. All 3 are very difficult to close. Like very difficult. They unlock just fine.

I reached out to Bolt about how the locks were difficult to close and they had some follow up questions to ask. They wanted to know if they were having issues moving in general or just when it is clicking shut? Is it only happening when the lock is on its side instead of vertical? Or all the time? You can try using a silicone spray, or a PTFE spray such as WD-40 Specialist dry lube. You do not want to use regular WD-40 as it will actually pull out all of the grease that is used within the lock core itself

Of the 3 I bought, 2 are still very difficult to close and one broke entirely. I love the convenience of one key but do not trust these locks anymore.

Works as advertised. No issues.

Like most any lock they can be a little temperamental after being out in weather a while, but a shot of lock lube or WD40 takes care of that. "Training the lock to your given key is a breeze, and I definitely like the convenience of not having to try and recall which key is needed to use them!

I wanted to give a little heads up and let you know that what you want to use with the Bolt locks is a silicone spray, or a PTFE spray such as WD-40 Specialist dry lube. You do not want to use regular WD-40 as it will actually pull out all of the grease that is used within the lock core itself.

Love this padlock. Keyed it for my Toyota Tundra. I also have several of the BOLT hitch pins lock and a BOLT reciever lock. Very convenient to use your ignition key for these. Better yet, have a cheap, non-chipped copy of your ignition key and keep it on a different keychain and use it for your locks, to open your vehicle doors and tailgate, etc. even while your ignition key is in the ignition. When you have a non-chipped key copy, be sure to NOT try the non-chipped key in your ignition as it will not start the vehicle and will disable it if you try it a few times. But non-chipped key copies are a enconomical (a few dollars to have some made) and besides using the for these locks, your tailgate and doors, you can also hide a copy on your vehicle to unlock your doors if you lock your chipped keys in the passenger compartment.

6 stars! Love this lock. Matches my truck, 1 key to start truck and unlock trailer. No more trying to figure out what lock is on what trailer or which key do you need or forgetting the key.

by:

I have used the iButton locks for a year or more. They stay locked in the truck all year. Never had a problem with time. Add that quality to etrailer service and you can lose.

by:

The brought this lock as a spare and have not use it yet. The lock seems very well made, however it is unknown how theft proof.

  • Best Padlock Option for The Collar Lock by Collar Marketing with Toyota Truck
We don't carry that coupler lock so it's hard for us to pick you out the best padlock for it based on our experiences. From looking up pictures of it online I can see that a standard pad lock would work well. Since you have a Toyota Truck the part # BL7023539 would be a great option. This will allow you to unlock the padlock with your ignition key which will make keeping track of the key for the lock more convenient.
