Marine-grade, free-backing hydraulic drum brakes won't engage in reverse, even if your actuator is activated. Automotive-grade friction pads are long-lasting. Dacromet-coated backing plates resist rust. Fit 13" to 15" wheels.

Features:

  • Marine-grade hydraulic drum brake assemblies are great for boat trailers
    • Designed for use with surge-type trailer brake actuators
  • Free-backing design lets you back up without engaging the trailer brakes, even if the actuator is activated
    • Fall-away brake shoes only anchor on drums when brakes are engaged as trailer is moving forward
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gears allow for a more precise setting
  • Dacromet coating on backing plates offers superior corrosion resistance
    • Ideal for use on a boat or snowmobile trailer
    • Durable enough for saltwater applications
  • Stainless steel springs are durable and rustproof
  • Aluminum hydraulic cylinders resist rust
  • Single plunger design
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assemblies and off of the shoes
  • Left-hand (driver's-side) brake assemblies, right-hand (passenger's-side) brake assemblies, and mounting bolts included
    • Ideal for building multiple trailers
    • Nuts and lock washers (BRKH10B25) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Specs:

  • Quantity: 25 left-hand and 25 right-hand assemblies
  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO
  • Dimensions: 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 4 bolt
  • Wheel size: 13", 14", and 15"
  • Axle rating: 3,500 lbs
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

Free-Backing Brake Assembly

Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.

Each of these free-backing hydraulic brake assemblies has a fall-away shoe, which provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward, but supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. During normal forward braking, the fall-away shoe expands to catch your brake drum. When driving in reverse, however, the fall-away shoe's extra spring will overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder. This keeps the leading edge from catching on the drum, so the shoe will not fully pivot into the drum. This exerts a smaller amount of friction, just enough to provide a minimal amount of braking when in reverse.

These trailer brake assemblies act as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for these brakes to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Left and Right Hand Hydraulic Brake Kit Installation

This is what our brake assembly is going to look like, when it's installed. These are going to be great for your marine applications, like we have here. They're going to have a decrement finish on them, which is going to be a lot more durable than just your powder-coated finish. It's really going to hold up well against rust and corrosion. Our cylinder here, this is going to have an aluminum finish. So again, being aluminum finish, it's really going to hold up against rust and corrosion.

All of our springs are going to be stainless steel. Our pads are going to be fully bonded, instead of riveted. And the nice thing about that is, is less chance of them breaking apart, like the riveted ones.Down here on the bottom, this is going to be an adjustment screw. And you're going to have two plugs on the backside here. You pop one of those out and you're going to spin this to adjust your brakes.

Another great thing about these, is these have no lockout. So, a lot of times on boat trailers with electric brakes, when you're in reverse, the brakes will lock up. So, you'd have to unhook the trailer, or unhook the wiring from the back of your vehicle. With these, these do not have the reverse lockout, so you can move your trailer either direction. And these are going to be designed for hydraulic brakes, not electric brakes.

These are going to come as a set. They are going to have a right-hand and a left-hand. Installation process is pretty straightforward. Now, that we've gone over some of the features, let's go ahead and walk through, how to get them installed.Start your installation on installing your new brakes. First, you need to remove your tire.

On the back side, if you have hydraulic line set up, you need to remove that line. Bearing Buddy, if you have them on your trailer and you didn't put them on, how you take them off, you just take a hammer to, just like a cap and you're just going to kind of work around, until it pops loose. There is going to be grease inside there. We're going to wipe this out. Take a pair of needle-nose, we're going to take this cotter pin out, right here. Take this cap off, remove the nut. There's a ring right here and then your bearings. What want to try not to do, if you're not replacing your bearings, is try not to let them fall on the ground. Kind of slide our hub out, like that. Pop that retaining ring off. Pull your bearing out. Slide your hub off. And we need to remove this. Four nuts here, 5/8 socket. Remove your old one. We're going to install the new one. And we'll make sure that this is at the top, your adjustments at the bottom. We're going to use the same nuts and flat washers, or lock washers. Only, they're going to be installed in the backside. Keep in mind your brakes do have a right-hand and a left-hand and there should be a sticker, like this on it. Right side is going to be passenger side, left side is going to be driver. And then we'll tighten those down. Once you get those tight, there's going to be a little black cap on the backside, pull the cap off. We can go ahead and screw in our hard line to the back of our brakes. I'm going to try not to bend these too much, because they can break. So, these can be kind of a pain, both to deal with, to get them lined up correctly. You want to try not to cross thread those, while you're putting that in. Once you get your line put in place, put that back on and then you're just going to re-install everything, in reverse order. One thing to keep in mind, if you're replacing your bearings, you want to repack the bearings, before you put them in. If you're not repacking the bearings, your bearings are a good, you can go ahead and re-install them, because the Bearing Buddy's that we took off to begin with, those are going to allow us to pump grease inside of that. When you re-install this nut, we don't want to use a socket to put it on. All we want to do is, we want to take the play out of the drum. So, we're just going to hand tighten it on there, just like that. Once you get that on, put your cap on and then re-install your counter pin. And if you're using Bearing Buddy, just hammer it right back into place.Once you get your Bearing Buddy put back in place, go ahead and re-install your wheel. What do you want to do, is spin it. And you want your brake pads to actually stop the wheel. So, you may need to make some adjustments. The reason we want them to stop our wheel, is because we want the brake pad to wear evenly. If you go listen to it. Kind of hear it going in and out. That means only a part of the brake pad is touching. We'll pop the cap out. Once you get your cap off, make sure you hold on to it, so you can put that back in. This is actually a tool for this. You can find these at your local auto parts store. We're just going to spin that adjustment wheel. It's got little teeth on it. We'll spin it, till we get it to sit where we want. You can kind of hear how the whole pad is grabbing it.Once you have your brakes installed and you've added new fluid, it's a good idea to bleed your brakes, to get any of those air pockets that may be stuck in your lines. Once you get one side adjusted, you get your trailer back on the ground. Don't forget to torque your lug nuts down to the specifications. Once you get one side completely done, repeat the process on the other. That's going to do it for a look at and installation on etrailer's Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit.

Replaced my left and right brake assemblies on my 2000 Jayco Eagle UDK 16, popup camper. No problem removing the 4 nuts I sprayed with penetrating oil the day before, or the hydraulic line. I used new mounting hardware BIK-00 and installed the new units without any issues. I did bleed the lines and cylinders, and the brakes really didn't need more then a few clicks to adjust, best the brakes have every worked since I owned the camper, I am the second owner. I also replaced the hitch coupler / master cylinder with a new unit from etrailer AT82543, Jayco used 4 bolts to secure it, super easy to change. Parts arrived when expected and in great condition! Thanks etrailer.com!

Good fit and good follow up with telephone questions on hardware sizing and torque settings. Look to be of decent quality.

by:

Good product, as advertised, one year no issues

by:

The fit of these was perfect. My trailer is a 2002 so it had seen quite a few miles since it was new and I can't imagine the brakes were ever replaced given the condition.

I highly recommend purchasing the hardware that goes with this and reading the instructions on proper adjustment. Along with a new actuator this has my trailer braking like new!

by:

These brakes seemed to work fine. Installation wasn’t too bad. It didn’t seem to totally solve my problem. I suspect that the surge brake actuator was what was causing the problem. I’ll never know because I sold the trailer.

Stripping down a 16 year old 21 ft. salt water use trailer - from end to end. The folks @ etrailer were very knowledgeable, and helpful in my decision making. From placing the order, to tracking the order, to the way the items were packed for transit. Other distributors could learn from these people; in regards to customer service, following up, both office and warehouse. Unloaded the products last night, nothing short, all quality in regards to their products, with great pricing. The installation videos are a big bonus, and something I'll be taking advantage of, during the restoration. Will follow up with picture, (before and after) when I'm done

I was disappointed that the new brake assy was delivered w/o the 7/16"-20 nuts and lockwashers needed for installation. My original brake assy had different size nuts. The new assy had permanently installed studs, so I had no choice, but to go to a hardware store to figure out what size nut I needed.

by:

I got a complete rebuild parts order for the surge brakes on my boat trailer. The parts are excellent quality, the shipping was prompt, the prices were great and the help and service was super. I would certainly order from etrailer again!

by:

I cannot comment on it's performance, although I am sure that the brake assembly will work better than it's predecessor. Order the washer/nut kit as well, it is less than two dollars. One of my old ones actually broke and I had to put a good amount of heat on the other three to get them off. The adjustment screw was easy enough to move the brakes in as well. I will be ordering the left side brake assembly tomorrow.

by:

Ordered brake assembly, fast response & delivery time. One year later, parts are working great!
Highly recommend ordering from etrailer!

by:

Excellent product and good customer service. Shipping was fast and free. Disappointed because it did not come with the required locking nuts.

by:

All in all I am happy with the package. The master cylinder hangs up sometimes which makes for some sketchy braking. If I had to do it again I would have gotten the better master cylinder.

by:

A high quality replacement brake Backing plate

by:

Exact replacement easy to install

by:

Perfect fit and simple to install. Pre installed studs are a great idea however the 4 nuts for those studs should be included as well. Also there is no hole to plumb a break flusher into if your trailer has one. Couple minor things but I still am extremely happy with the purchase.

by:

Delivery time was great, parts were as stated and were the parts needed for trailer repair

by:

Got the 4 bolt's, why not the washers and the nuts for the back plate ?. Would have saved me a lot of driving. Other than that Great product. Thanks

by:

Made my trailer like-new. Etrailer support was fantastic; user friendly and professional. I'll continue doing business here.

by:

Easy to deal with and product was exactly what they said. Arrived on time. Will buy other parts from this company as needed

by:

Parts are as described, well wrapped and arrived in great condition. Very happy with fit and product.

by:

Easy installation

by:

Perfect fit, easy to get on and adjust. Sorry sold the boat and have no photos. Thanks

by:

The product fix exactly as it should. We replaced 1 of 4 and will keep you in mind if the others go

by:

Great price, prompt delivery and great product.
