Troubleshooting Reese Towpower 74643 Brakeman Digital Brake Controller

Question:
I have a 1997 F250 HD and have wired the Reese Towpower 74643 Brakeman Digital Brake Control according to directions with the exception of using 12awg instead of 10awg. The issue I am having is that with no trailer connected I dont get the dot lit up when hitting the brakes or override. When the trailer is connected, itll light the display with both but when hitting the brake itll be a dim 0.5 on the display no matter the power setting and when I override itll display the relative power to where the override is pressed to. I used a probe and a friend to check the continuity at the plug and with only his probe light the brake controller worked fine showing the right strength that was set...but for some reason with the trailer plugged in I would only get the faint 0.5 no matter where it was set to. Is this a ground issue with the white wire out of the 7-pin? Or is there an issue with voltage going through controller? I have a 30 amp breaker as prescribed and tried a new one with no differences, I even hooked the black hot wire directly to the battery and no change.

The first thing that I would do is to check and make sure that the 7 way on both your 1997 Ford F250 and the trailer are free of dirt, moisture, and corrosion.
If both look good, I recommend checking the ground connection on your truck. A weak ground will only support a limited current draw. You will want to check to make sure that the ground wire on your truck is secured tightly to a clean metal surface without any paint or corrosion.
I have also attached a troubleshooting guide for brake controllers that you can check out.
