For a spring I recommend using the Redline ramp springs Right Hand # RS16933RH or Left Hand # RS16933LH depending on what your application calls for. These are designed for trailer ramps and are rated for 2,000 lbs so you know they will work properly.
Since you mentioned a gate you might be interested in the Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist w/ Chain # RA-27C instead as it's meant for smaller ramps on utility trailers.
