Availability of Old Round-Style Brake Magnets for Hayes 12 x 2 Electric Brakes

Question:

I have a trailer with the 12x2 old style hayes electric brakes. I need a new magnet, but cant seem to find one anywhere. Will the new style magnet work if I replace the actuator arm with the new style. Thanks

If your trailer has pre-1988 Hayes electric brakes that use the round-style magnets you will have to replace the entire brake assembly. Until a few years ago the old-style round magnets were still available as replacement parts but they are no longer offered. It will therefore be necessary to update your trailer with new brake assemblies. In your case you will also need to replace your hubs/drums in order to use these new brake assemblies. Replacement hubs/drums need to be matched based on bolt pattern, bearing and seal numbers and the axle weight rating.

We do offer the Hayes/AL-KO 12 x 2 electric brakes part # 185100-150. These mount with a 5-bolt pattern. These are rated for 7000 pound axles. I have included a video on this product.

The mounting hardware (nuts, bolts and washers) are sold separately. We do not recommend re-using old hardware. The part numbers for these components are # 7-5 for the 1-1/4 x 3/8 inch bolts; # 38N for the nuts; and # 38LW for the lock washers.

You will need either 4 or 5 of each item per wheel depending on your bolt pattern.

I saw your answer to a fellow back in 2013 about 12x2 circle brakes by Kelsey Hayes, I have four on my trailer and only one works, would love to know if you’ve found any, I can’t seem to! Is there a way to repair them, on three the second wire has broken off leaving them non operable any ideas? Not looking to replace 2 axles and everything else! I have two 7000 lb axles with habco 1307 drums 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern

Unfortunately replacement parts are no longer available for those particular brake assemblies (nor the original Kelsey Hayes assemblies themselves). Are you able to replace just the brake assembly or are they integrated into the hub and axle? If you can remove and replace just the brakes, the # 185100 and # 185150 Adam mentioned above should work well. Otherwise, the only option would indeed be to replace your axles and hubs with more current/standard units.
