Question:

Hi eTrailer team! Im looking for a weight distribution hitch for a 2017 Jeep Renegade. The Jeep Renegade has a 2,000lb tow limit 200lb tongue limit. Im towing a 1,700lb trailer and would like a weight distribution hitch for a little more comfort since Ill be close to my max recommended weight trailer has electronic brakes. From reading the advice youve given, Ive seen its important to find a weight distribution kit that is close to the tongue weight youll be using. However, all the ones for sale seem to be very highly weight rated! What might you recommend in this lower limit weight class? Ive a Class III hitch installed, and will be using a 2inch ball. Thank you!

The first thing that I recommend doing is making sure that your trailer hitch receiver is rated to use a Weight Distribution (WD) system as not all hitches are designed to use one. I looked in an online manual for your 2017 Jeep Renegade and didn't see anything against a WD system, but it is always good to double check.

You are on the right track for the Tongue Weight (TW). You need to make sure that you get a system that has a TW range that your Total Tongue Weight (TTW) falls in the middle of. Your TTW can be found by adding the weight of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer plus the weight of any cargo that will be sitting behind the rear axle of your Renegade. Keep in mind that the TW of your trailer should be between 10-15% of the weight of your trailer.

Since your trailer is on the lighter end of towing I recommend going with the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # 66557 which has a Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) of 4,000 lbs and a TW range of 100-400 lbs. Unless you were to have some pretty hefty stuff behind the rear axle of your Renegade this system will work great for you.

You can use the Tow Ready # 63845 2 inch Hitch Ball with this system for it to be compatible with your trailer.

I have attached a review video and some helpful articles that you can check out.
