I have Thule escape II and trying to mount on BMW x-1 with OEM roof rack.. spacing between rack is not large enough to allow cargo bag to sit on roof. Any suggestions as how to install?

You only have a couple of options with a factory roof rack on your BMW X1. You can remove the crossbars and allow the bag to sit level or you can let the bag rest on the crossbars which isn't ideal. My recommendation would be to install a roof basket like the Curt Roof Mounted Cargo Basket - 41-1/2" Long x 37" Wide x 4" Deep - 150 lbs # C18115, to hold your bag on top of the roof rack.
