Increasing the Load Weight Capacity for My 5x10 Trailer
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
I have a single axle 5x10 utility trailer that is tagged with a Max Load weight of 2070 lbs. I need to move my Kubota tractor with bucket and backhoe which weighs 2700 lbs to a new home approximately 300 miles away good highway roads. I am wondering if I can modify my trailer to increase the load capacity to about that 2700 lbs ? has 3500lbs axle after checking tag , The suspension springs are double eye, 3 leaf, 1-3/4" springs, - measuring 25 1/4" from eye to eye.

First thing I would recommend would be to see if you can identify the weight capacity of the axle by locating a tag near center of the axle. If you have a 2,000lbs. axle it would be possible to upgrade to a higher capacity system. It is important to note that this will not increase the weight capacity of your trailer's frame, which is something you will be limited by. Even after upgrading all the parts, you could attempt to reinforce the frame by welding on more steel but unless you had the trailer assessed you wouldn't know what the new capacity it is rated to carry.
We do offer 3,500lbs. axles with brakes like # e43SR or one with idler hubs like # 35545I-ST-89, I have linked the page for your convenience. You would want to make sure that your hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center dimensions match up.
Next thing you would need to do is to upgrade the suspension, the 4 leaf spring that will work for your dimensions will be # SP-218275.
Next step is to replace the wheel and tires, with this you will want to check the bolt pattern and load capacity to make sure they will all be compatible. If you were to go with one of the axle recommendations above then a tire and wheel combo like # AM3S331 would be a good choice for you depending on the height of the tire your trailer can accommodate, you can check for clearance by comparing the tire size of the # AM3S331 to your current one, the tire and wheel combo I suggested has a diameter of 13 inches and a width of 4-1/2 inches.
I have linked our axle, tire and wheel combos, and suspension pages for your convenience.

How close do the spring saddles need to be to the end of the tube where it's welded to the spindle, so the axle is the strongest?
