Snow Tire Chains and Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2011 Toyota Prius

Question:

2011 Toyota Prius states SAE class S type radial tire chains except radial cable or vbar type... What chains/cables can be used? The manual states the above sentence. If you call the dealership/service you get many different answers including you cannot put chains on any hybrid due to the electric/gas blend system. This doesnt make sense. So what chains/cables can be used on a standard 2011 Toyota Prius tire size P195/65R15 89S? PS Also have questions about bike racks, was told you cannot use the hollywood/hatchback type of trunk/hatch mount racks.

First, you always need to go with the owners manual recommendation which seems to be to use Class S chains provided they are not cables or v-bar links. I am not sure why using chains would interfere with the electric/gas hybrid system unless during a braking event the chains cause some tire slippage thus not allowing the battery to charge.

For Class S chains that are not cables or v-bars you can use some basic square link chains like # PWPLC1130 with tensioner # PW99. This is a no-frills set of chains with square links that go straight across the tread surface. These are great for infrequent use when you just need chains just in case.

For the ultimate in clearance, installation, and longevity I would go with the Thule K-Summit chains # TH02230K23 (if you have 21 millimeter lug nuts you will also need adapter # TH0223021mm). These chains will be the easiest to put on the vehicle. They do not reach behind the tires so clearance there is not an issue. They are made to last a long time and are great for areas where chains are a must.

I have included some FAQ and video links on tire chains for you.

For trunk mount bike racks we do have several listed as a fit for a 2011 Toyota Prius, see link. For Hollywood Racks we list the Expedition 2, # HRF6-2. However if there is a small spoiler at the top of the rear hatch that would interfere with the installation of the hooks and straps then a trunk mount bike rack cannot be used because the spoiler cannot withstand the stress.

Since Toyota states not to put a hitch on the vehicle the remaining option is to use a roof rack to carry bikes. I have included a link to the roof rack main page for your vehicle for you.
