Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Volkswagen Touareg - Curt

Today on our 2012 Volkswagen Touareg, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Curt Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13116. Here's what our Curt Class III receiver hitch is going to look like once it's installed on our vehicle. You can see it's going to be real nice and tucked up underneath the backend of our vehicle, replacing that bumper beam that was originally under there. Now, this is going to have a 600-pound max tongue weight capacity and 6,000-pound towing capacity with that 2" by 2" receiver tube. Keep in mind that with this receiver hitch weight distribution is not recommended. I have a 5/8" pin hole going straight through to attach all your accessories as well as heavy-duty fully-welded design and black powder-coat finish that's going to help make it durable and prevent any kind of rust and corrosion. Now, I'll go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you in selecting from hitch accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is going to be about 1-3/4".

Let's go ahead and connect up our test light and make sure everything works properly.

Thule Roof Rack Review - 2012 Volkswagen Touareg

Today on our 2012 Volkswagen Touareg we are going to be doing a test fit of the Thule Aeroblade Roof Rack System and the foot kit, right here. This would be part number THARB53 and TH450R. As you can see up on our vehicle we already have our front one in place, we are going to show you how to put the second one in place and how it looks once its all complete on top the vehicle. First thing we are going to do, is rotate the end of the Aeroblade, press down on the tab located here and lift up, that will remove the end cap and give us the ability to slide on the T-track system here. Slide the T-track into the grooves, to where its allowed to fall down like so. You want the Thule reading outwards, with the locking mechanism as well. That way your strap is undone and you are ready to rock and roll as far as putting it on.

Now, it's going to have a sturdy steel construction as well, it's going to have 150 pound weight capacity. You can see that we already have it up here with 3 of the feet installed, but we're going to show you how to install the final one. The first thing you're going to need to do, is before you get started make sure that you have your adjustments for your crossbar spread. Measure from one point on one, to the one point on the other one, and get your crossbar spread whatever measurement that may be, in this case we are at 30 inches. This can be adjusted and permanently set, so that way when you're pulling it on and off your vehicle you can set it up quickly and easily and easily take it off in a matter of minutes. We'll go and place this other foot on.

When we do want to use it all we have to do is bring it out, pull out whatever length we're going to need to make the connection with our trailer, or bike rack, or cargo carrier, allow it to drape right over here and you can see we've got a nice cushion right here. We won't have to worry about that doing any damage to our wires. Now we do want to avoid the striker area right here in the middle so it doesn't get pinched. You can see that's going to come out, easily connected when we're done, open the hatch and coil that wire back up. I'll show you a little tip to keep it all together.

Volkswagen Touareg Questions

  • Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so you can install one on your 2015 Volkswagen Touareg. Between the P2, # 90885, and the P3, # 90195, I prefer the P2 because it is the better entry level controller. There are some special installation instructions for the Touareg. I have included a link to them for you. As far as location, you will need to install the controller so that it is within easy reach of the driver. Placing it over a panel that has an airbag behind it...

  • Having used both the Thule Apex # TH9027 and the Yakima FullSwing, # Y02465, I can say that the Apex is superior in just about every way (in my opinion). The cradles on the Apex are much better at protecting the bikes as you have said. the rubber straps are durable as long as they are not overstretched (they just have to be snug, not as tight as they can be), and the adapter bolts on and is made of metal so no worries about it. Both carriers have a built in anti-rattle...

  • We have several Pollak brand 7-Way trailer connectors. We have # PK11893 which is the type that accepts the wiring harness that just plugs into it. And we have # PK12707 that you have to hardwire the wires to. We also have a metal Pollack 7-Way, # PK12703. If if you happen to need 50 of # PK11893, you would use # PK11893-50. I was not able to find part PA66-GF30 on the Pollak site.

  • You can use a strap like the Thule Tie-Down Strap, part # 753-2030-03 to secure the front wheel to the frame of the bike or the bike rack to prevent it from turning or spinning. Also when carrying womens, childrens, or alternative frame bicycles, I would recommend using the Swagman Frame Bike Adapter Bar, part # 64005. This will allow you to carry those types of bikes level on your bike rack. I have included some links to instructions and videos for you.

  • The correct faring will depend on which crossbars are being used. Rhino Rack and Yakima both offer roof rack systems for your vehicle. If your Touareg has the rails that run from front to back on either side of the roof, the fairing most likely sit on top of the sun roof, which would make it inoperable. In my research, I was unable to find a good photo showing a top view of the vehicle. If you have the Yakima round crossbars, the 44 inch fairing you mentioned # Y07048 would...
