Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan

Today on our 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan we're going to be taking a look at and installing the T1 Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118675. When you're ready to use your trailer plug you just take it out of your side pocket here and lay it over top of our sill plate, making sure to keep it away from the latch part of it. We can close our door down on top of it and plug it into our trailer. When you're all done you'll open it back up and fold it away. You just take your excess, take your weather proof cap, put it around the outside, plug it up and set it in here until we're ready to use it again. It's all completely kept away from the elements. Here's what our kit's going to consist of.

Volkswagen Tiguan Questions

  • I have pulled all three of the Class III hitches available for your 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan and you were correct that the Curt hitch # C13133 has a shorter overall height compared to the Draw-Tite # 75658. The Curt # C13133 has an overall height difference of approximately 1/8 of an inch shorter than the Draw-Tite. In the pictures I have attached the dimensions for each of the hitches as well as a video snapshot of the Draw-Tite # 75658 that is installed on a 2011 Tiguan to...

  • The Hidden Hitch, part # 87600 (no longer available), and the Draw-Tite, part # 75658, are essentially the same receiver hitch and will perform the same. These are two different manufacturers that offer hitches of similar design, the real difference is in the product name and price. I would recommend the Hidden-Hitch for your vehicle, because it is less expensive and has the same capacity as the Draw-Tite hitch. Along with the hitch you are considering you may also need the...

  • The TowReady T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118384 that you referenced is not a fit for the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan. This 4-pole harness uses a standardized round U.S. Car Connector to plug in to the vehicle wiring and your Tiguan does not use this type of connector. Currently there is one confirmed fit for a 4-pole trailer wiring harness for your vehicle and it is a hard-wired type converter, part # 118675 from Tekonsha. This kit installs...

  • Yes, we offer 2 inch hitches that are confirmed to fit your 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan. The Draw Tite Hitch part # 75658 and the Hidden Hitch part # 87600 (no longer available) are basically the exact same hitch and are both a fit for your vehicle. They are both made by the same parent company, Cequent. They also share the same installation instructions. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670....

  • Many Curt brand hitches do carry the warranty requirement to use a strap like # 18050 when any non-wheeled load is installed in the hitch, such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. This applies both to their 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch # C12097 and their 2-inch Class III hitch # C13133. The strap can be positioned at the top of the rear hatch, or on other vehicles to one of the raised roof side rails or roof rack crossbars. Since use of the strap can be a nuisance for some folks...

  • For starters, I would recommend doing some troubleshooting. Use a multimeter like part # BTMT15 and test the leads feeding the brake assembly magnets. Have a helper activate the manual braking switch on the controller, while you probe the wire. You should be getting approximately 12-volts at the brake magnet. The Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies are known to click, make sure that they are installed on the correct side of the trailer. The # 23-469 should be installed on the...

  • If you have side rails that run from front to back on your 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan then the Thule Rapid Crossroad Roof Mounted Railing Foot Pack # TH450R would be the correct foot pack for installing a Thule Roof Rack with Aeroblade cross bars. The correct cross bars for this setup would be the Aeroblade bars part # THARB47. If you have a naked roof without any side rails you would want Thule Rapid Traverse Foot Pack # TH480R with the fit kit # THKIT1621. The correct cross bars...

  • I believe you will find that your trailer setup will be within the 220 lb tongue weight limit of your 2011 VW Tiguan. You should check the actual tongue weight to be sure, but I did some calculations and found that if your trailer is loaded properly the tongue weight should be somewhere around 190 pounds at most. Close, but within the limit the manufacturer set for your Tiguan. Normal tongue weight for trailers is between 10 and 15 percent of total trailer weight for best towing...

  • When installing a trailer hitch like # 75658 it is necessary to use a torque wrench to get the bolts to the right tightness. If not, and you just try to tighten them as hard as you can, you can damage the vehicle frame. Too loose and the hitch could fail when you tried to use it. Many auto parts stores lend out tools so you will not have to buy one in most cases. If a bolt is supposed to be torqued to 38 foot pounds, for example, you can use a torque wrench that has a rating...

  • Any item mounted on a vehicle's roof, whether a roof rack, a cargo box, kayak or bikes, will generate some level of wind noise that increases with speed. There is simply no sure-fire magic-bullet solution for this issue. A whistling sound usually comes from the rack crossbars. A wind fairing can help in some circumstances to lessen noise from a round bar roof rack, but its quieting effect could be swamped by the presence of a cargo box that itself will generate some noise....

  • All of the hitches we carry for the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan fit all US market vehicles. So as long as you have a US model Tiguan either the Curt Hitch # C13133 or the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75658 would work well for you. These hitches do have rather different designs and attachment points, but since they have the same towing capacities they will both perform the same. I would prefer the # 75658 for a couple reasons. First being that this hitch does not require the use...

  • On most vehicles, the bumper beam is attached to the vehicle frame. A hitch that attaches to the bumper beam (a lot of Jeep and Dodge truck applications are like this) is just as safe and secure as a frame mount hitch. It would take an impressive amount of force and one heck of a crack in the road to pull the bumper off of a vehicle, provided the hitch is installed correctly. Your mechanic may be thinking of a hitch that attaches to a square bumper like # E-100. You would...

  • I imagine your bike rack has a shank designed for a 1-1/4 inch receiver with a sleeve that can be used to adapt it to a 2 inch receiver, is that correct? If this is the case, unfortunately the # 63232 will not work for you, because the threaded block would not fit into the shank of your bike rack. You could however use a standard locking hitch pin like part # 40107 along with an an anti-rattle system like the # RM-061. I personally use the # RM-061 when I tow my PWCs, and they...

  • Since you already have the 7-way trailer connector, all you will need is the Tow Ready adapter, part # TR20141. This adapter uses an internal load resistor that will prevent the bulb out sensor from triggering. Without the LED adapter, the very low power draw from the LED trailer lamps will make the bulb out sensor think there is a burned out trailer lamp bulb. Simply plug the adapter into your existing 7-way, and then plug the 4-pole on your trailer into the adapter. There...
