Volkswagen Tiguan Questions

  • The TowReady T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118384 that you referenced is not a fit for the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan. This 4-pole harness uses a standardized round U.S. Car Connector to plug in to the vehicle wiring and your Tiguan does not use this type of connector. Currently there is one confirmed fit for a 4-pole trailer wiring harness for your vehicle and it is a hard-wired type converter, part # 118675 from Tekonsha. This kit installs...

  • For a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan that has the factory side rails that run front to back then you can use the AeroBlade Edge roof rack # TH7501-TH7502, whether you have the panoramic roof or not. Thule was just here for training and the new Edge systems are very streamlined and have a more OEM appearance. If the roof, when opened, raises higher than the tops of the side rails then you will not be able to open it with the rack installed. If you need the roof rack for a specific type...

  • When installing a trailer hitch like # 87600 it is necessary to use a torque wrench to get the bolts to the right tightness. If not, and you just try to tighten them as hard as you can, you can damage the vehicle frame. Too loose and the hitch could fail when you tried to use it. Many auto parts stores lend out tools so you will not have to buy one in most cases. If a bolt is supposed to be torqued to 38 foot pounds, for example, you can use a torque wrench that has a rating...

  • I believe you will find that your trailer setup will be within the 220 lb tongue weight limit of your 2011 VW Tiguan. You should check the actual tongue weight to be sure, but I did some calculations and found that if your trailer is loaded properly the tongue weight should be somewhere around 190 pounds at most. Close, but within the limit the manufacturer set for your Tiguan. Normal tongue weight for trailers is between 10 and 15 percent of total trailer weight for best towing...

  • There are two options for adding trailer wiring to your 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan. First, you can use Upgraded Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with Install Kit, # 119190KIT. I have included a link to the installation details and a video showing a basic installation below. You could also use Curt PWM Powered Converter - Stop/Tail (ST) -Circuit Protected, # C56200KIT. • On most vehicles, the bumper beam is attached to the vehicle frame. A hitch that attaches to the bumper beam (a lot of Jeep and Dodge truck applications are like this) is just as safe and secure as a frame mount hitch. It would take an impressive amount of force and one heck of a crack in the road to pull the bumper off of a vehicle, provided the hitch is installed correctly. Your mechanic may be thinking of a hitch that attaches to a square bumper like # E-100. You would...

  • For starters, I would recommend doing some troubleshooting. Use a multimeter like part # BTMT15 and test the leads feeding the brake assembly magnets. Have a helper activate the manual braking switch on the controller, while you probe the wire. You should be getting approximately 12-volts at the brake magnet. The Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies are known to click, make sure that they are installed on the correct side of the trailer. The # 23-469 should be installed on the...

  • Since you already have the 7-way trailer connector, all you will need is the Tow Ready adapter, part # TR20141. This adapter uses an internal load resistor that will prevent the bulb out sensor from triggering. Without the LED adapter, the very low power draw from the LED trailer lamps will make the bulb out sensor think there is a burned out trailer lamp bulb. Simply plug the adapter into your existing 7-way, and then plug the 4-pole on your trailer into the adapter. There...

  • According to Tow Ready, the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan needs to be wired using the BM-1 code in the instructions (linked for reference). This would mean that the brake lights, turn signals, and tail lights are combined onto 1 circuit for each side of the vehicle. So you will attach the yellow wire for the converter to the left side wire on the vehicle that carries those 3 functions, the green wire attaches to the combine 3 function wire on the right side. The red and brown wires...

  • I imagine your bike rack has a shank designed for a 1-1/4 inch receiver with a sleeve that can be used to adapt it to a 2 inch receiver, is that correct? If this is the case, unfortunately the # 63232 will not work for you, because the threaded block would not fit into the shank of your bike rack. You could however use a standard locking hitch pin like part # 40107 along with an an anti-rattle system like the # RM-061. I personally use the # RM-061 when I tow my PWCs, and they...

  • If you have side rails that run from front to back on your 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan then the Thule Rapid Crossroad Roof Mounted Railing Foot Pack # TH450R would be the correct foot pack for installing a Thule Roof Rack with Aeroblade cross bars. The Curt # C13133 has an overall height difference of approximately 1/8 of an inch shorter than both the Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch. • The Hidden Hitch, part # 87600, and the Draw-Tite, part # 75658, are essentially the same receiver hitch and will perform the same. These are two different manufacturers that offer hitches of similar design, the real difference is in the product name and price. I would recommend the Hidden-Hitch for your vehicle, because it is less expensive and has the same capacity as the Draw-Tite hitch. Along with the hitch you are considering you may also need the following items. Drawbar...

  • Any item mounted on a vehicle's roof, whether a roof rack, a cargo box, kayak or bikes, will generate some level of wind noise that increases with speed. There is simply no sure-fire magic-bullet solution for this issue. A whistling sound usually comes from the rack crossbars. A wind fairing can help in some circumstances to lessen noise from a round bar roof rack, but its quieting effect could be swamped by the presence of a cargo box that itself will generate some noise....
