Adjustable, Easy to Read OLED Display

Curt Assure OLED Display

The high-quality OLED display on this brake controller makes the screen easy to read at a glance. The text is large and you can tilt the screen to the angle that makes it easy for you to see. Instead of displaying codes that you have to look up, this display shows full-text descriptions of errors so you can quickly address any problems that come up.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Curt Assure braking output
Braking Output: Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. Use the + and - buttons to set the output. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust this setting unless the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. The OLED display will show the current output setting being used.

Sensitivity: Once you have the output set, you can fine-tune the power by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor. This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the set output level. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does. The sensitivity setting gets the braking power to your trailer brakes faster and with more intensity so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle forward.

There are 9 sensitivity levels (boost levels), with 1 being the least sensitive. At level 9, the sensitivity of the internal sensor is as high as it can go. Press both buttons at once to switch into the sensitivity mode and adjust to the level you need for smooth, safe braking. When you change the setting, the display on the Assure will flash the level before reverting back to showing the power output.

Curt Assure braking output
Manual Control: The manual override button on the Curt Assure is pressure sensitive for precise braking power. When you press the button, the trailer's brakes will be activated with the same amount of force, without activating the brakes on your tow vehicle. This is great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. The braking intensity will be indicated on the OLED display when you press this button.

Safety Features

The Assure offers key safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. This starts with built-in protection against shorts and positive and negative power reversal, as well as continous diagnostic checks to alert you to any potential problems as they come up. To minimize the drain on your vehicle's battery, the controller will automatically go into power-saving mode when not in use. This feature will turn on after 30 minutes of inactivity and turn off again the moment you press the brake pedal.

Another great way that the Assure protects the longevity of your setup is a hold feature that saves wear on your brakes. When you're waiting at a red light, you don't need your trailer brakes on at full power. The longer you sit there, the more they will overheat. But with the Assure, any time your tow vehicle and trailer are at a standstill for a prolonged period of time, the controller will reduce the power output to the brakes. This will keep your trailer in place while saving your brakes.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the Assure ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at a vertical angle within 90 degrees, and the controller will level itself automatically. This makes the installation that much easier. But keep in mind that the Assure must be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel to work correctly.

Curt Assure Trailer Brake Controller Mounting and Installation

Installation is a snap. If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, either a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Curt Assure brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Assure uses an internal inertia sensor to detect how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Universal Wiring Adapter for Curt Trailer Brake Controllers
part number: C51515

This wiring adapter is designed for vehicles that do not come equipped with a factory brake control wiring harness port. One end plugs into your Curt trailer brake controller while the other end splices into your vehicle's wiring.

Features:

  • Universal wiring adapter eases installation of your electric trailer brake controller
    • No need to wire brake controller directly to your vehicle
  • Wire end splices into your vehicle's wiring
    • Use on a vehicle that does not have a factory tow package or on one that has a brake control harness but is not equipped with a plug-in port
  • Connector end joins with the plug on your electric brake controller
    • Compatible with time-delayed and proportional brake controllers from Curt
    • Simple to plug and unplug control for removal
  • 2' Long, 12-gauge wires have protective covering to deter damage
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Installation of Curt Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Curt electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller. However, if no port is present, you will have to splice into your wiring.

With this universal adapter, you can install your Curt brake controller without having to wire the controller directly to your vehicle. If your vehicle has a factory tow package, just splice the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's factory brake control harness wiring, and then plug the other end of the adapter into the controller. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory tow package, you'll have to hardwire the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's wiring. Because only the adapter is hardwired to your vehicle, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to purchase additional equipment to ensure that the signals from your brake controller are sent to your trailer's brakes. We recommend etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

Not too difficult to install, but I would recommend using a car lift so you don't have to work from your back (review includes wiring harness and 4-7 Pole Adapter)

by: Robert 03/24/2024

With the adapter kit, installation was easy. Controller is very responsive when towing.

by: Chad Mc.04/24/2022

The resources at etrailer.com made my purchase easy. By having specific truck lookup ,correct wite adapter and specific product videos. Looking forward to my first trip with curt assure brake controller.

by: Tom C.03/10/2014

I have the Dodge Ram Truck 94 model with factory wire 7 connector plug. This is the truck that many people can't find the blue wire under the dash. 94 model didn't come with a factory wire plug under the dash like later models have. I found the wire tape to the main wiring harness about two inches from the fire wall to the right of the emergency brake paddle. This harness worked great

by: Frank S02/14/2014

this went into my VW Touareg which requires the relay modification described in the Technical Bulletin. Because ground and +12V is already present in the harness, instead of running additional cables, I soldered the relay right into the cable, making it a clean plug and play setup which is 100% removable. I also bought the VW housing and wire kit to complete the install

by: Mike10/14/2022

Worked perfectly with the Curt Spectrum.

by: Micah07/18/2022

2006 Dodge Ram. Easy install. Plug it in and tie up the wires. I put a wire protector sleeve to cover the wires coming out of the controller.

by: Thomas03/07/2024

This is used on a 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 pulling a 16' enclosed cargo trailer. With the appropriate adaptor cable it was very easy to install, just plug in and mount in a convenient spot. Once installed it was simple to get it matched to the weight and brake setup of the trailer. Close to 6k miles with it so far & very happy.

by: Richard08/24/2023

Good prices and selection but the shipping was pretty slow. Almost had to go buy a cheap brake controller to get my towing job done. I'd buy from etrailer again without hesitation assuming I didn't need it right away.

by: Kent E.06/05/2016

Wiring up a brake controller can be tricky. Routing the wire from the hitch to the firewall and finding the right wire on the brake are the hardest part, but etrailer will do their best to help.

Consider running the wire inside the car along the door bottom just under the carpet. This avoids problems with the tie-wraps under the car -- there just isn't anywhere to tie wrap under the middle of the car. Use "loom clamps" ordered separately to solve this problem, if you go under the car.

To find the right brake wire without cutting insulation, use the fish wire from the hitch install to contact the end of the wire inside the connector (from the back). Then touch the fish wire with the continuity tester and apply the brake pedal. My brake had a four wire connector and I found the right one on the second try.

If you find a hole in the firewall with a rubber plug in it, don't discard the plug. Make a short slice in it with a razor blade and push the wires through. You may have to work the wires around to get them through the carpet. Be patient.

Be sure to watch all the videos and allow plenty of time, taking a break before you tackle the hard parts. Rest assured that doing it yourself is better than allowing UHaul to cut corners and charge you labor. :-)

If you are doing the hitch install and four-wire harness, those are much easier. If you are installing the hitch alone, be sure to have a magnet wand for when you push the bolt up into the frame rail. If I had it to do again, I would use a little electrical tape to hold the bolts down so a slight bump wouldn't knock them up.

Ive not had any trouble with the hitch or the brake controller. I can tow my tear trailer anywhere I want and the hitch protects my mufflers from damage when I go offroad. Nice extra benefit.

I own a 2008 Chevy Silverado. I ordered the brake controller - C51515 and the universal wiring adapter on Friday and received it on Tuesday. My friend who is a mechanic installed it in about an hour on Wednesday. I towed my camper trailer to Lincoln, NE (about a 5 hour trip) on Thursday and returned on Sunday. After reading the settings instructions, all stops were made smooth and firm. Etrailer.com was great and the Curt Trailer Brake Controller is excellent!

I have enjoyed the use of the electric brake controller. The stops are always safe and smooth. Im glad I got it for my truck and Ive never had a problem with it. I just need to get out and use my camper more! The initial contact with etrailer.com was very favorable and I will do business with them again when I need something for my trailers or tow vehicles.

by: Howard S.04/06/2017

I bought a 7 pin trailer wiring/brake connection for my Dodge pickup. I installed it myself, the instructions were absolutely clear and correct. It was an easy installation. In the year since, I've pulled my trailer (tandem axle, 16') many times. The brakes continue to work perfectly as well as the lights. The connectors are solid, all work just like new. I recommend Etrailer parts and their people 100%!

Still working great. Not any problems. A great product

by: Michele04/02/2022

VERY easy install. As mentioned in other reviews the hardest part is finding the factory plug in for a 2017 Tacoma. Toyota tucked it way in the back behind a wire bundle. Picture attached for reference.

by: Peter 06/22/2021

This is a "must have" if your vehicle did not come with a "tow package". If your vehicle does have a tow package try to get the correct wiring adapter and you can just plug it in without having to make wiring connections.

Quality parts
with excellent communication

by: Richard 12/02/2022

I can't tell you how much time you saved me. I need a clean wiring no junk connection you hit it out of the park plug and play wires I love it. And the price was cheaper than the local trailer shop that tried to they would have done it
better I seen their work thank you again for the great service and fast shipping.

by: John 10/11/2022

This was a quick and simple installation. The flat connector cover does not stay on and needs to be redesigned. Does not have enough friction. Generous squirts of Fluid Film keep it from corroding,
The round connector cover is fine.

by: Bill09/12/2022

The directions on this item are horrible. I finally figured it out and was able to install it onto my Ram 1500, but only after spending hours trying to make everything fit right. If you're looking for a hitch setup to pull a trailer long distances, I would advise you to look at other options. This will work for my short trips with my half-ton pickup, but I would not want to pull anything more than 50 miles with this setup.

by: Ronnie07/11/2022

Controller worked great. Stops smoothly and properly. The only problem is when I disconnect the trailer the display continues to say there’s a problem and won’t stop until I unplug it. Called technical for help and he said there’s a short somewhere but I haven’t found any short or cause.

by: Tyrone 02/12/2024

Worked great

by: Michael11/04/2021

The Curt Spectrum Brake Controller works great for my 2008 Toyota Highlander. I mounted it on the front of the console armrest compartment behind the cup holders (facing forward). I was easily able to route the wiring out the bottom of the console and access the module under the drivers seat (be very careful installing the pins into the clip, they are very fragile). Then I ran the wires under the bottom edge of the console and out through the fire wall (Be very careful drilling your hole through the firewall. I caused some damage I had to have repaired}.
Also, the help I had from Yolanda, making sure the kits I needed were compatible, was extremely important because I was leaving for a cross country trip later that week. She was wonderful and everything worked great for my trip.
Thank you etrailer. I'm a regular customer and will remain so.

by: Anna09/29/2022

I had this professionally installed at the trailer rental place so I can't comment on installation but the technician indicated it was fairly simple. It works great!

by: Michael 09/22/2022

  • Does Curt Assure Brake Controller Require Level Ground to Configure
  • It is recommended to run the configuration of the Curt Assure part # C49UR when you are level ground. I would try to find a parking lot near you that has a level surface and try it there. At worst you should be able to get it really close on unlevel ground but once you find level ground check it there as well. You would not need to reconfigure it with every use. It will store setting unless you cut power to it.

  • Brake Controller & How to Determine Tow Capacity of 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali AWD
  • I Googled the owners manual for a 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali and it stated that the towing capacity will depend on a couple factors. So in order to determine the towing capacity you have to know if you have a long or short wheelbase, as well as your axle ratio. An axle ratio of 3.08 will be 6,000 or 6,300 lbs while a 3.42 axle ratio will be 8,000 or 8,200 lbs depending on your wheelbase. When towing a trailer that large it will have electric brakes so you'll need a brake controller, and

  • When Does Brake Output Circuit of Vehicle 7-Way Have Voltage
  • The brake output circuit on a 7-way (5:00 pin) will only have as much voltage on it as the brake controller is sending. Typically this going to depend on the amount of gain selected on the controller and other factors like brake controller style and ramp up speed of the controller. The only time the circuit would have voltage without the brake pedal being applied would be if you had the manual override lever of the controller slid. I attached a couple help articles on brake controllers

  • Troubleshooting Curt Brake Controller Installation in 2007 GMC Sierra New Body Style
  • First I suggest making sure you are testing the brake circuit pin on your Sierra's 7-way trailer socket. If you refer to the linked photo of a trailer connector you will note the brake controller's output is carried on the pin at the 5:00 position; the ground is at the 7:00 position. If you happened to test the 12V auxiliary power circuit, carried on the pin at the 2:00 position, it will have power at all times. I see that you purchased Curt Universal Wiring Adapter # C51515 which

If none of them have labeling then it would be best to test their functions with a circuit tester like part # PTW2979. • Troubleshooting Curt Brake Controller with Short Error When Override is Slid

I would suspect there's some exposed wire that is creating a short that you'd want to use some electrical tape to insulate and fix. The other place to check is the wiring behind your trailer wiring connectors for shorts. If not that it's the controller that has an internal short which is unfortunately not uncommon for Curt brake controllers. The Prodigy P2 # 90885
