I like the overall design of this rack, but unfortunately after hauling a couple bikes around for a while the point where the crossbar connects has apparently rounded off so the rack swings back and forth. I've used rope to tie the ends of the rack to the car to stop this from getting worse, but it's inconvenient. Note: the hitch connection itself is good and solid, but the point where the crossbar connects to the bar coming from the hitch has gotten loose and there's no way that I can see to tighten it.

I hear you! It looks like there are bolts where the crossbar connects to the bar that goes to the hitch. If you tighten those back down, that will take care of that extra movement.

I was advised to tighten up some bolts on the hitch and that resolved most of the sway I had been noticing. The rack has been working great ever since.

by: CJ03/31/2023

It works great! Easy, quick, you know. One needs to screw in the hitch bolt, for some reason, before latching it. Other than that, it makes going bike riding way easier.

It works great. I attach it, use it, remove it, and put it away. Thanks!

I own a 2005 Jeep Wrangler X with 31x10.5x15 oversized tires and
wheels. I installed B6196001 HighRock 4x4 Oversize Tire Carrier
by Bestop to carry larger spare tire.

I needed a bike carrier that would carry our two crusier bikes and
clear my spare tire. After measuring, I ordered:

-> S64650 - Swagman 2-bike carrier
-> 80300 - 7" Hitch Adapter 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver
-> RM-061 - Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches

Our order arrived very quickly, etrailer.com upgraded the shipping.

All these products arrived well packaged and without damage.
In 15 minutes I had every thing assembled, installed on my Jeep
and bikes loaded.

The bike carrier is very well constructed, finish is excellent and
easy to adjust.

When adjusting wheel loops and loading bikes, make sure you
pay attention to bike pedal position.

I chose this extension because I did not want to use the adapter
that comes with the bike carrier, I wanted as few parts as possible
to keep rattles to a minimum and gives me more options for towing.

The anti-rattle bolt/pin firmly secures the bike carrier to the
extension and the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch keeps the extension
adapter from rattling in the receiver.

Road tested approximately 25 miles over rough city roads
( including railroad tracks ), county roads and highway.
Bikes traveled very well without any rattles.

I can remove my complete setup quickly, fold and put in rear of
Jeep if desired.

I am very well pleased with my purchase.

Note to etrailer: Please consider offering Roadmaster Quiet Hitch
in black to match receiver and accessories.

I had ordered a Swagman bike rack from etrailer and they let me know it would take over a month to get it since the manufacturer was trying to catch up. They recommended another model by Swagman that they had in stock and it was less expensive. I got it promptly and the suggested product will work fine for us. The best thing about ordering from etrailer is that you can get video demonstrations of the product before buying, they show you add ons you might want but don't have to buy-and they have them. They will talk to you about the product and their shipping (at least right now) is free. With the products they sell, their customer service really tops Another online retailer and other retailers in my opinion. Great people to do business with.

Nice & sturdy the bikes don't rattle around loke other racks that use the bar

by: Anthony03/01/2020

The Swagman XC2 was Shipped same day I ordered it and I received it within 2 days. I put it together easily and tested it with my bike. It was the easiest and most stable bike rack I have ever owned. Kudos to etrailer for their service and Swagman for the product. ABSOLUTELY NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS!!!

GREAT, strong, silent and easy to use. I couldnt have chosen a better product

by: Neal08/22/2022

I am still using it, and please consider what I am going to say before buying or using it. When taking this rack with bike on it offroad the upside down J hook that holds the bike down rattles out of place. This means that the bike is no longer secure. The paint on my bike wore down to the aluminum where the padding rubbed against it. I hit a big bump on the pavement and pulled over to find that the J hook was now barely touching the bike - almost lost the bike just because I hit a bump - not cool.
The fix is that I took a foam noodle and use that covered in tape between the pad on the J hook and the bike frame (no more rubbing away paint). I also use a strap with a buckle, buckling it around the bike and bike rack top bar, with the other end tied to the bike rack bottom bar. It's perfect like that.

Neal H.

8/31/2023

So, the rack is now a bike stand in my garage and has been replaced. If you hit a bump in the road it will compress your tires and suspension, then upon the rebound the J hook pops up and now the bike is rattling around. If you have a second bike on it like I did and that happens the pedal on one bike may scratch the heck out of the other brand new bike and cause irreparable damage. I tried tie downs, padding, and even duct tape to prevent this. The model that I got is useless.

That is so sad to hear. Swagman is generally beloved by most of our customers. I hope your other hitch works better for you! You definitely should not let it just sit in your garage taking up space.

by: Jim07/09/2020

Easily fit two bikes and no clearance issues around the car. Rack feels sturdy and assembly was easy. The bike closest to the car restricts trunk access but otherwise trunk opens with just one bike.

5/14/2022

ZERO STARS! Do not buy this rack unless you have a bike with a flat cross bar or little tires like the pictures show. I was made a turn to get on the highway and my bike didnt. With an angled top tube nothing keeps the bike in place when it pulls out to the side.

I recommend using a bike adapter bar such as part # HRBA-PRO to create the straight that will attach to under the bike handle and under the seat. Or choosing a bike rack like part # HLY94FR which will attach to the bike frame that you have and also allows for the wheels to be strapped down.

I use this bike rack to haul a recumbent bicycle on the front of my truck. It works excellent! My son also has on which he hauls his mountain bike on the back of his car. My son uses the 1.25" hitch and I use the 2" adapter both work very well.

12/1/2020

Thank you for the review. I recommend to use the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2 Trailer Hitches part RM-061 if you have a 2 hitch. If you have a 1-14 hitch you can use part RM-061-125. The Quiet Hitch will tighten up the space between the shank of the bike rack and the hitch receiver to eliminate some of the rattle.

Alvin

Im having trouble much of the time to take out the bike from the locking thing is. Its so hard to pull it out

by: Clifton 08/24/2022

Reasonable price and strong. Moves a little bit in the hitch but not excessive.
Biggest complaint is the lever for the hold down bracket for the bike can be a little difficult to release and adjust.

Clifton

10/28/2023

Still use it regularly, my previous notes are still valid. The adjustment for the wheels can be a little tricky to get tight enough so they dont move if you use them to lift the unit

by: Judy11/02/2020

was able to attach the bike rack to my 2020 equinox without any problems. Right now only 1 bike on it but will have another one later. Ready for a "glow roll."

Haved crossed the USA twice now with inexpensive mountain bikes on this rack and it's been 5-stars all the way. Plus, we use it 3times a week to haul the bikes to the our kid's mountain bike team practive. It's an expensive rack, but Tough. Solid. Simple. In a word: Great. In the winter, to keep it from rusting (they salt the roads around here) I spray it with T-9 and 3 years later, it's 100% rust-free.

Short-term review: Bought this for a 2002 Subaru Forester with 1-1/4" hitch receiver. Very easy & quick to install. Just after receiving it, installed it and threw my mt. bike on it, drove round-trip 240 miles to ride with some buddies, and no problems whatsoever; the rack felt solid. I do put a cam cinch strap around the bike & rack as redundancy, but the rack's ratcheting hold-down hook does stay down very well and holds the bike down tight. Great value too, as most of the other name-brand racks are two to three times the cost. One thing to note: I cannot open the hatch of the Subaru with the rack on. If you have a car with a hatch with an opening rear window, you can probably still open the window. I am OK with this for the price of the rack. It's very quick to take off the bike(s; just a 3/4" box wrench or socket to remove the hitch pin and then the rack. With a socket & adapter for a cordless drill, I can remvove the rack from the car in about 20 seconds; with a socket wrench, under a minute. Definitely happy with this purchase! Oh yeah, etrailer's customer service is awesome!

Mike P.

11/20/2022

FYI, after one year of use, Im still very happy with this bike rack. A clarification on my initial review from 111921: Although I cannot open the hatch with two bikes on, I can open the the hatch with only one bike on the rear-most of the two bike trays. Again, it takes only seconds to remove each bike, and the center post folds down with a simple pin removal. On a side note, I even designed a simple bike rack for our boat kayak racks, using the center post and ratcheting hooks and a wood base that I made. This way, I can take the bikes down to the marina on the bike rack, remove the center post and ratcheting hooks, transfer this to my homemade wood base, and voila, I have a similar setup on our boat, all for a fraction of what two two-bike bike racks from Thule, Yakima, etc. would cost.

by: David07/11/2022

Fantastic for the price! It isn’t very beefy, but packs away fairly small and it’s easy to install. We use it a lot and are extremely satisfied. I think some people don’t tighten the bolt that goes through the hitch enough? I can still open the doors on the van if it’s not loaded with the bikes.BTW Good customer service.

A few people have commented to me about wanting my rack because it was lighter than there hard to handle rack.

by: Jim 03/05/2024

The bike rack is solid and was easy to put together (just follow the pictures and use common on a couple of small parts). Speedy delivery was also nice. Perfect. Thanks.

by: Tim H. Tran05/30/2018

After setting up my new bike rack, I found that the "universal tow hitch adapter" that's used for bigger tow hitches such as my Toyota Tacoma didn't seem to compliment entirely.

Attached pictures, you will see that the locking bolt and along with the cotter pin to secure the locking bolt onto the tow hitch doesn't quite reach through all the way across. Therefore, I wasn't able to insert the cotter pin through the locking bolt and couldn't safely secure my bike rack to the tow hitch of my Tacoma.

I know the Toyota Tacoma is a very popular vehicle and I recommend all future orders be replaced with a much longer locking bolt (at least 1/2 inch longer) to accommodate truck owners like me.

On the contrary, the bike rack does manage to fit onto my Mazda5 Minivan when utilizing the smaller tow hitch (without the universal tow hitch adapter for Class 3 Receiver). The bike rack is very versatile when loading bikes of various sizes and folds up to stow away very conveniently. Overall, great product!!

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

5/30/2018

The problem youre experiencing is occurring because the factory hitch on the Tacoma has an extra piece of reinforcement wrapped around the mouth of the receiver tube. This extra piece of metal adds about a 1/4 inch of width to the receiver, which is why the pin wont go in far enough for the retaining clip to fasten. Swagman doesnt offer a longer standard hitch pin, but they do offer a locking model that would be long enough, part # S64029 which has a 4-3/8 inch span. Ill link you to this part below. Swagman has assured me that this part will work for you.

by: Il Cammello08/16/2019

The Swagman XC2 is a terrific hitch rack for 1 or 2 bikes: stable, easy to load/unload, and affordable. In my first month of ownership I have traveled 400 miles with the rack loaded and it has been rock solid. Adjustments are easy for bikes with different wheelbases and the rack folds into a very compact package when not in use - it does not significantly impair rear vision. Trunk access can be limited when the bikes are on the rack and there's no built-in locking mechanism to secure the bikes to the rack, but overall this rack is a great value.

Il C.

8/17/2020

A year has passed and Im still very satisfied. This summer I took 2 bikes on a road trip of more than 2,000 miles and had no problems with the rack.

by: Michael11/26/2017

AFFORDABLE, TOUGH, EASY, LIGHT.

Low
profile as well.

I drive a 2016 Fiesta ST and mountain bike a fair amount. I love this thing. Only hard part is getting the tow hitch you need in addition to this rack to fit my car properly.

Luckily this site has a great video of install.

Two person job...and you'll need a modified exhaust hanger(s) to have the stock muffler clear the hitch. Otherwise it will rattle ya silly.

Michael

11/26/2018

It’s still kicking. I leave It on all the time and my Fiesta ST has a VERY stiff suspension so for all is well after another year! I should Probably spray some sort of protectant on the unit but all is still functioning just fine: Thanks again!

by: J Lance06/30/2012

I really like this bike rack. Easy to assemble. East to mount on my 2004 Chevy Tracker. I also found it easy to mount my two bikes. I was concerned about clearance from the spare tire, but as you can see there is plenty of clearance. In fact the bikes don't touch anything else. I also purchased the velcro straps to secure the bike wheels to the wheel mount.

Robyn

7/8/2014

Yes Lance. Does this picture show a ladies bike? Were you able to mount a ladies bike step in model without an adaptor?

Swagman bike rack is very sturdy and provides a great platform for transporting my mtn. bike.
The 2”/1.250” receiver allows me use rack on all of my vehicles.
Easy assembly and as always, Great service from ETrailer...

A year in and Swagman bike working flawlessly, no complaints

by: MaGoo00708/25/2021

I don’t have a problem with the bike rack itself, but it had a broken plastic cap and one of the wheel holders had a little spot where the paint was scraped off to bare metal. This wasn’t damage from shipping, because everything was packed extremely well in a very intricate layer of folded cardboard cutouts. (And I couldn’t put them all back together to save my life!) So I’m not sure at what point the damage occurred, but it was prior to shipping. The only other thing I had a hard time deciphering was the instructions, in which the assembly order was a tad bungled because it would’ve been easier to do in a different order. That and you need a magnifier to see the details in the illustrations! lol All’s well that ends well and overall I think it’ll be a great purchase. I’ll have to try to make some touch up repairs to prevent the two damaged areas from creating rust, but there’s no way I’m shipping it back after opening the origami box. ;) The working details of this rack are great and it is exactly what I was looking for in a simple design and easy to load/unload. Shipping was super fast as always! Thanks!

Not strong enough even for a 35 lb bike. A 4 yr old boy sat on one of the tire hoops and bent it down. I bent it back up. On the way home I Hit a bump in the road and the rear tire hoop bent down far enough to release the crossbar clamp, the bike fell off and slid down the road. Luckily it wasn’t a good bike. Tire straps stronger hoops. The hooks are too exposed under supported and easily bent

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

6/20/2023

This bike rack has a capacity of 35 pounds per bike however I can see where the hoop would bend if sat on by a 4 year old. What I would recommend is taking a look at part # HR200Z which is rated at 45 pounds per bike and is a little more sturdy for the money.

by: Hiker Steve02/19/2020

Great bike rack that works well on my 2016 Prius. Easy to use and I can still open the rear door on the Prius with the bike on the rack. I regularly take my bike when I go hiking in the Smokies to ride between trailheads. Quality product at a reasonable price. I highly recommend this product.

Hiker S.

2/19/2021

Ive used the bike rack more than a dozen times and it still works great. The only issue I had was while driving on a dirt road I hit a large bump in the road and the bike bounced off the back of the car. Fortunately I was driving slow and there wasnt any damage to the bike or rack. After that incident I started using a short bungee cord around each wheel to secure them to the rack and keep the bike from bouncing if I hit a bump.

Sierra K.

2/22/2021

Thank you for your review. That sounds pretty dangerous. I would just like to make sure that you installed the bikes on correctly. Each wheel rested in the wheel cradle then the cradles were tightened. The hook came down onto your bike or onto an adapter (for step through bikes) and it was pushed down into place for a tight fit. The bikes should not be bouncing off the rack if everything is tightened down.

The XC can accept a wheelbase up to 51-1/2-inches and tire widths up to 3-1/2-inches wide, while the XTC can handle wheelbases up to 66-inches but tire widths only up to 2-1/2-inches. Another important difference is the amount of clearance each rack...

  • Advantages of Swagman XTC-2 Bike Rack Part # S64670 Versus the XC Rack Part # S64650
  • If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the XTC-2, part # S64670. Not only do the rubber straps you refer to further secure the bikes to the rack, but the wheel hoops themselves are much stronger. The rack includes a threaded hitch pin, but I would recommend the optional locking hitch pin/cable lock combo part # S64031.

  • Swagman XTC2 Versus XC2 Bike Rack Comparison
  • If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the XTC-2, part # S64670. Not only does the XTC2 have rubber straps to better secure the wheels, but the wheel hoops themselves are much stronger and are slightly raised for better ground clearance. The rack includes a threaded hitch pin, but I would also recommend the locking hitch pin, part # S64029. With the addition of two padlocks like part # 131D, your bikes would be secured to the rack.

I would recommend the Swagman part # S64650 over the Curt # C18084 though as it is a bike rack we have been selling a while now and it is just very reliable and a great bike rack at that price point. The Curt rack isn't bad, but it's not any better than the Swagman and weighs almost 20 lbs more so it wouldn't be what I would go with. This would work well with the Curt hitch part # C11265. Truly grooving on my wife's new Swagman Chinook bike rack. She wanted to be able to transport her nice road bike easily without throwing it in the back of her car, and since a roof rack is out of the question, this Swagman model fit the bill perfectly.

It arrived quickly on the anticipated date. Kudos to etrailer.com for the email updates to keep me informed of my purchase. Within one hour, it was installed on my wife's 2014 Mazda3 hatchback. The Swagman is heavy and solid, which is reassuring as it makes me feel confident that it will keep the bikes secure. It also makes me feel like I got my money's worth. A ratchet wrench and Phillip's head screwdriver were the only tools required for the easy install.

I did my research before purchasing the Chinook model as I was also eyeballing a very similar Thule rack that was slightly more expensive. I spoke with an etrailer.com expert who gave me the lowdown on both models. Ultimately, the Swagman won out because it has a smaller 'footprint' while extended or folded up ... and also can tilt away from the car for easy access to the hatchback area. Very convenient!

FYI: Mazda doesn't make a trailer hitch for the Mazda3 as it's a small car with a small engine and has no business towing anything. Thankfully, the Curt company makes an aftermarket frame and trailer hitch that fits the Mazda3 hatchback perfectly with no drilling. Stupidly, I purchased it from another online company thinking I was getting a good deal. Turns out etrailer.com had it for less with FREE shipping. Oh well ... live and learn. Now I know that etrailer.com is one-stop shopping for bike racks AND trailer hitches. (Full disclosure: I had the garage down the street install the frame as it's easier with a lift)

Only snafu: the shipment contained an extra set of keys that I assumed was for the hitch bolt lock (there was also a set of keys on the bolt itself). I spent 15 minutes using those keys trying to figure out how to remove the lock from the bolt to install it on the hitch. The keys just wouldn't turn in the lock. I called etrailer.com and Kevin told me to try the other set of keys ... and they worked. So an extra set of keys came with it that did absolutely nothing ... weird!

Obviously, I can't speak to the longevity and durability of the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack as I just installed it. What I can speak to is the sturdiness of it, the ease of the installation and my complete satisfaction with the good folks at etrailer.com.

Its been a year and my wife thinks her Swagman dual bike rack is the cats meow. Its works as well as the day we purchased it with absolutely no issues. The best thing a bout the rack is how easy it is to put back on the car. My wife, out of the blue, said she wanted to go riding and that she needs the rack. I took it out of the shed, []ed it into the hitch, tightened the bolt with a ratchet wrench, and 5 minutes later, she was good to go!

I ordered the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack on line from etrailer and so far have been very satisfied. The bike rack was delivered in less than a week. Unpacking the rack and assembly was fairly straightforward. I have read some reviews that complained the assembly instructions were a bit vague. I didn't have a problem but can see where others without a mechanical background get confused.

The rack is very sturdy, but there is some side to side play in the tilt mechanism. I'm not sure this can be avoided with a rack that folds down. Installing the Curt trunk stabilizing strap takes most of the sway out of the rack.

Installation is fairly easy and quick. It takes me 6 - 7 minutes to install the back on my hitch, and to install the bike and be ready to drive away. That seems reasonable to me. So far I've only loaded 1 bike.

I've included pictures of my installation on a 2014 Mercedes Benz E350 sedan. Clearance between the bikes, the rack and the car are good. With the bike loaded in the inside, most forward position, I have 6" clearance between the pedal and the bumper. With the bike removed, the center support folded flat and the rack folded up in the storage position, I have 4" clearance between the closest part of the bike rack (the fold down hinge assembly) and the back bumper of the car.

I am able to open the trunk of the car without removing the bikes or using the tilt feature, but I do have to remove the stabilizing strap first.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the bike rack and think it will serve me much better than my old strap on rack. Since the weather has been cool since getting the bike carrier, I haven't taken any long trips to give it a real workout.

Im still very pleased with the bike rack. Have taken several 200 mile trips with 2 bikes and am very satisfied.

by: Joshua M. 07/15/2016

This bike rack is very sturdy, which adds to its hefty weight. Overall, it secures my bikes very well and the locking mechanism for both the hitch and bikes seems to be of good quality. The bikes would probably have to be damaged to be removed from the rack while it's locked, so that's about as much as you could ask for I guess. I bought this to enable transport of my triathlon bike with a disc wheel, which works perfect, even without the rear wheel strapped. The bike secures very snugly, so it doesn't shake around at all, although there is minimal play in the hitch...only very slight sway. For the price, quality, and utility, I'd definitely recommend this rack!

Love my new Swagman Chinook 2-bike rack! Impressive packaging to protect product for shipping. Assembled easily and transports my bike beautifully. I appreciate easy adjustments, multi-folding features, sturdy design and locks: 1) from rack to car receiver and 2) locking bike(s) onto rack.

Working great a year later. I’ve used it many times to transfer my bike and, multiple times to transport 2 bikes. Very sturdy. In generally keep the rack on the car so the folding feature is great. I have also used the tip away feature to open the back gate of my Ford Escape when the bikes are on the rack. I don’t notice any rust developing so far. I’m very happy with this purchase.

by: Susan06/11/2021

The install was super easy following along with the video. The Chinook is excellent quality. A year later and lots of local trips and two trips from PA to Florida and the rack is still in perfect condition. The key for us is IT DOESN'T RATTLE ON THE HIGHWAY! If I had to listen to 14 hours of rattling on I95 the bikes and rack would have been on the side of the highway. Exceptional value and quality!

Susan

6/12/2022

STILL NO RATTLE! We use it all the time and it is as great as the first day we used it!

by: Joey01/15/2023

Highly recommend the Swagman Chinook Bike Rack! I have been using mine regularly during the last year and have had no issues. It's easy to attach and remove from my Honda CR-V. It's very sturdy and doesn't shift or 'bounce' around when I'm driving.

A year later and Im still loving the Swagman Chinook Bike Rack! My original review sums it up.

by: Nauti08/24/2020

waited a few weeks to review in order to fully use the rack as intended. First off, assembly was a breeze. I mounted this on a 2019 Subaru Outback 3.6 with a 2" receiver hitch. With 2 mountain bikes mounted up the rack showed very little to no sway while driving. The rack is very solidly built. The included wheel trays will fit up to a 3" wide tire (tested with a Specialized Fuse Comp 27.5+). The tilting feature gives plenty of room for the rear hatch to open. Levers for the tilt function and the support bar are solid and lock into place very well.

The only real negative with this is that it does block the rear view camera and back up sensors but that is to be expected with something that is mounted right in front of the bumper.

Overall, well worth the wait for it to arrive back in stock and highly recommend the Swagman Chinook over the pricier Thule Doubletrack.

Things I wanted in a platform bike rack:
-Rack
that could accommodate at least a 49" wheel base
-At least 35 lbs per bike capacity, but preferably 45 lbs
-A Rack that could fold up and out of the way without hitting the bumper or interfering with the rear hatch opening.
-A rack that would have enough clearance to still open the hatch with the bikes mounted and tilted away.
-My bike (that I was concerned about fitting): 2017 Trek Fuel EX 7 29er, size XXL.

This rack hit all of those requirements! I was a bit hesitant because there was no confirmed fitment for the 2014+ Forester (beyond some measurements), but I ordered it anyway.

I'm happy to report that the rack fits perfectly. I attached pictures that show that there is plenty of clearance when the bike is mounted, bike is mounted and tilted away (to open the hatch), and when the rack is folded up (to clear bumper and open the rear hatch).

Rack itself:

-Assembly and installation was fairly easy. The directions could be somewhat confusing, but read carefully and pay attention and it will be easy.
-The cam locks that are used to tilt/fold the rack and to release the vertical arm are much more convenient than having to remove and re-insert a pin.
--there is some up and down play from the tilt/fold cam lock, but it actually does not cause excess movement when the bikes are mounted and the car is moving, hitting bumps, turning, etc.
-Very minimal movement from the rack while in motion.
-The padding on the hooks is fairly hard, so I did buy some pipe insulation to protect the top tube on my bikes.
-The rack hooks lock and there is a lock for the hitch pin. No cables necessary!
-The wheel trays are very sturdy and easy to adjust.
-The price was very reasonable, especially considering that locks are included.

Regarding etrailer.com
-awesome database of information AND the best prices that I could find.
-the support team is also very responsive and helpful.

I'm very happy with my hitch rack so far, and I'm very happy to have ditched my roof bike carriers!

by: jody09/15/2017

I have been using this with 1 bike (not 2 yet) for about a month now, and it has worked great for me so far. Yes it is pretty heavy and still has movement going over bumps, but it seems very strong. I just took the 2nd bike tire mounts off until I need them. Everything is metal on this except the bike frame ratchet track and button mostly. I use it on a 2014 sonic hatchback with the trailer hitch I bought from here as well. I recommend this for people not wanting to risk scratching the paint on their car. The pictures make it look like it sticks way past the sides of my car, but that's not correct.

by: Marcial M.12/05/2018

This worked well on my 2015 Chevrolet Malibu. I bought this rack to haul my two bikes 2300 plus miles from Charleston, SC to Las Vegas, NV and I am extremely pleased with it. It comes with bike and hitch locks that give you just enough security for those quick bathroom stops where your bike might be out of your sight for a few minutes. I was travelling alone so this was perfect for my needs at quick stops. The one night I stayed in a hotel, I did bring the bikes in the room with me. The mounted rack with the bikes felt solid and sturdy but did have a little wobble which is normal with hitch type bike racks. I have a Class II Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver (Item # C12115) and Curt recommends the use of stabilzer straps to be used with all non trailer loads so I used the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing strap (Item # 18050) and let me tell you, it works and I recommend it. It drastically reduced the wobble and kept the bike rack steady during my trip. I encountered heavy rain, snow, high winds and wind gusts and the rack withstood speeds up to 80 mph with no problems whatsoever. I love this rack and I highly recommend it. Great bang for your buck in my opinion.

by: Diane 08/12/2022

Very easy to install by one person. Easy to put bikes on. My 38lb electric bike ride without much wiggle/wobble. I did put a piece of insulating tubing on my bikes cross bar to double protect the paint. Very happy with this bike rack. Have told my friends they should consider the Swagman Bike Rack for their lighter weight ebikes or non ebikes.

After a year of use, I still find the Swagman hitch a great purchase and would absolutely purchase again.

by: Timecatcher6402/08/2021

Great 2 bike rack, it's heavier than I thought but easy to assemble. The bikes are easy to load/unload and they stay very secured while you drive. My only concern is the tire cradles when you're not using the rack they are easy to be stolen. I bought a wire lock to add a little more security. Anyway I'm happy with my purchase.

by: Antonio03/22/2024

The ordering process was easy, lots of pictures. The package was delivered on time and the box was without any damage. The bike rack was really easy to put together. All metal construction, except for the contact point for the bike. Feels solid.

by: Theresa06/21/2018

I purchased this rack for my 2014 Subaru Forester. I originally bought a used Thule rack that hung the bikes from the top tube (or the top tube adapter, in the case of my mountain bikes), but my bike hung too low. After much research into various racks, I selected this Swagman Chinook. The ratings were good, the price was right, and it had all the features of a much more expensive rack. The rack was very easy to put together upon arrival, and it took me just a few minutes to adjust it to my mountain bike's size. I really like the fact that the rack locks to the car and also locks the bikes down to the rack. The rack tilts in easily to the vehicle when not in use. It's easy to put the rack on and take off of my car as well. I found the easiest way to load my bike (Niner RIP 9) is to raise the top hook to the tallest height and then lower the top tube hook rack. After I put the bike wheels in the tray and ratchet them down with the padded straps, I swing the top tube rack up and lock it down. If I attempted to load the bike with the top tube rack up, I had to really maneuver the bike around it while trying to get the wheels seated, and worried I'd scratch my car. I took it on a trip up north on a very windy day, and there was no sway. So many great features at a price that can't be beat.

Theresa

Pretty good after a year. Discovered I need to re-tighten the hitch bolt where it connects the rack to the hitch - it loosens off with time. Otherwise, an excellent rack.

by: Dereck04/08/2024

The rack was easy to assemble and fits my Nissan Rouge perfectly.

by: Howard07/05/2017

Used our Swagman Chinook 2 bike platform for the first time today. My wife and I really like it. Drove about 60 miles to a rail trail at a state park. Easy to load and unload, travels well on the highway and secondary roads. Love the ability to tilt the rack with the bikes on for easy access to the rear door of our Subaru Outback. It appears to be a very well made carrier. It does weigh almost 50 lbs, and that is our only complaint.

Not great, had to upgrade Would rate it a three start product in retrospect. Much of the hardware is cheap. Having a single rail to move wheel cradle son really limits adjustments.

We bought the Swagman Chinook Hitch Bike Rack a year ago for our 2017 Subaru Forester. We had to have a hitch installed and the rack attached. It was too heavy for us to do it ourselves. But we needed an easier option than lifting our bikes onto the hanging rack we had. We realized we weren't riding as much as we wanted because it was such a hassle to get the bikes up and on the rack. This platform solved that problem, and now we ride several times a week. It is so much easier to handle the bikes now. We live in a high traffic, hilly area so we aren't comfortable riding on city streets. But now we can easily load the bikes and get to greenways and trails where we can safely ride. Great solution! We have talked with other older couples who have racks similar to our old hanging rack. They express frustration. But they also say adding a hitch + this Chinook rack is "too expensive". Yes, it does cost. But hey, our health--we're in our mid-70's--is worth everything, and if this means we ride more, it's money well spent. It too awhile to learn the steps when loading and unloading but now it takes only minutes. Thanks, Swagman!

We still ride, still use our Swagman Chinook Hitch Bike Rack, and still think its the best! A great investment. We leave it on all the time and its been through all kinds of weather. Still works great. I added fingernail polish to mark where the wheel trays go as they can get loose and move around when bikes are not on them makes it a lot easier to make sure theyre in the right place before loading. Its frustrating to lift a bike and then have the wheel trays not be in the right place. Minor issue, easily solved.

by: Rene06/04/2021

We love it. It was easy to put on. Love how it folds up too. We notice after one year now it needs some silicone so the parts will move better. Highl

We ordered the Swagman Chinook 2 platform bike rack to use with our Draw-Tite Max-Frame class III hitch that we installed on our 2019 Chevy Equinox. We are one trip in and loving it! It's very easy to load and unload the bikes. The tilt feature allows us to have full access to the rear hatch with the bikes loaded. The rack folds up easily when not in use. The lock features work great! We have a men's 3G beach cruiser and a women's Townie Electra. We were particularly worried about the rack fitting the women's Electra without using an adapter bar since this is a step-through bike, and it fitting the men's 3G wheels since they measure 3". It works without any issues on both bikes! We do have to put the women's bike on the outside and the men's bike on the inside to get the right fit - not a big deal, but takes a slightly bit more maneuvering. There is some movement, but nothing more than what would be expected. It does sit somewhat low on our vehicle, so use caution when driving on a steeper drive. Overall, we are very pleased with this purchase!

by: MStokley01/28/2017

First off I got tired of putting my bike in the back end of my 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek!
So, birthday present to myself. I bought the Curt 1 1/4" class 1 receiver hitch from Etrailer of course (posted install).
Then I ordered the Swagman Chinook platform bike carrier! Best bike rack purchase ever!
I did a lot of online comparisons, always been a Thule fan? But hands down the Swagman Chinook was the best bang for the buck @ $$$ and change from Etrailer!
It took me @ 15 minutes to put together straight out of the box, and waited til yesterday to put it on my car. As you can see from photos attached it works awsome! Now it's going to be a lot easier to travel to the BMX races!

by: Sam S03/27/2018

I have had this bike rack for a year now and use it nearly every week. This bike rack beat my expections by miles. Easy to install, easy to load bikes, secure, love the built-in lock on the hitch and bike rack. I have a full suspension Trek that makes it hard to secure with frame racks but this rack makes it a non-issue. The down side is finding the right distance for the tire craddles but really not too difficult. I couldn’t be happier with it.

by: Michael02/01/2018

I have a Specialized Turbo Como, which is an Electric assist bike, so a bit heavier and bulkier than a standard bike. I ordered the Swagman Chinook because I wanted support for the wheels as opposed to hanging by the frame.
It works perfectly.
I added a picture of the through bolt that is designed draw the 2" rack insert tight to the receiver to minimize sway, which it does. The problem is that the locking feature won't work because it extends too far and interferes with the tow package connections. If this bolt was 1 1/2" shorter it would work fine. I don't know why it is as long as it is for a 2" receiver, but it makes the lock unusable. My vehicle is a GMC Denali, but this would probably be true for all GMC and Chevy vehicles for the past ten years. That would be a great fix.

by: Randy B12/30/2016

Have had the carrier long enough to use it and tell you its a winner. Installation instructions were good. You might add a deep socket would be useful when installing the hitch pin stabilizer. What's great is that when the bikes are loaded you can easily lower them to open the SUV door. Returning the bikes to the upright position is easy. They bicycles ride tight and secure down the road. I'd recommend this rack.

by: George 07/31/2021

Good for transporting a range of bikes with different tire widths and wheel sizes (29er mountain bike, 27.5 mountain bike, fat bike, etc.). Have now had it for 2000+ miles. It does wobble and bounce a little, especially on bumpy roads, and the mechanism to unfold the rack tray is a little sticky at times. But otherwise a good value.

George

One year later, Im moving on to a better rack. The Swagman Chinook was fine, but the constant adjusting of the wheel trays to fit different bikes took its toll: one of the trays fell off the rack by accident. Still a good rack for anyone who uses it less often andor with only one size of bike.
