Brake controllers are wired to the vehicle wiring harness either through an OEM port on the vehicle or using a custom wiring harness specifically for that vehicle, and those can be found in our fit guide. The when the brakes are pressed on the tow vehicle the signal is relayed to the brake controller to activate the brakes on the trailer. I have included a couple of our help articles about brake controllers, their installation, and the different kinds for your reference. 48266
