Question:
Sorry if this is not the right etiquette, but the response I received from Adam R. raised more questions for me I will try to call too. I asked if computer codes needed to be adjusted for installing a hitch DIY on a 2013 Audi Q5 and Adam wrote Bolting on an aftermarket hitch...will not affect your cars computer but in some instances installing a wiring harness will...My contact at Tekonsha confirmed that he has heard of no necessary computer-related coding requirement from installing either of the above harness products on your car. From speaking to a mechanic and looking on the internet I am not an expert so forgive any incorrect statements I thought codes or software were needed to adjust vehicle performance, the computer system itself, and for the backup camera when towing. Read some long threads about DIY folksfoot trials and tribulations with the codes. So that response confuses me. My mechanical friend said he could do the install but Audi would need to install software not change codes as I previously asked about. Can you help clarify? Thanks again.

It is possible that some item like a backup camera (not mentioned in your original inquiry) could require some attention for hitch installation. Draw-Tite hitch # 75940 requires some fascia trimming when there is a backup camera.
Some cars that have lift gate sensors in the bumpers, to automatically open the rear hatch, will have one sensor blocked by the hitch tube and this means simply that you need to wave your foot under one of the others.
I cannot say for sure it this applies in your case, but it does happen that a dealership will tell owner's all sorts of things to discourage an aftermarket hitch purchase and induce buying a much more costly dealer-installed hitch. Again, this may not be the case for you but we do see it enough for it to merit mention.
We have to rely on what the manufacturer can tell us from their experience designing and testing the harness products they offer. Tekonsha said they know of no issues installing wiring in your car but that does not absolutely mean your car is identical to the ones they tested. I wish I could give you an absolute guarantee but all I can do is assure you that the technicians we work with at these wiring harness manufacturers are very well-versed in their products' applications and they have a very good track record.
