Would Dielectric Grease Cause Poor Engine Idle When Used on Spark Plug Wires

Updated 02/25/2010 | Published 02/24/2010

Question:

would putting dielectric grease on the spark plug boots, both at plug and at distributor cap, create a poor electrical condition and cause car to run rough after tuneup? thank you

No, dielectric would not insulate a connection or cause a poor connection. It coats the metal to protect from moisture corrosion, but the metal contacts will still physically touch so the connection will be fine.

Using other kinds of grease can insulate or break-up a connection. If the spark plug wires are not connected to the right pins on the distributor cap, your firing order would be off and the engine would run roughly. If the plug boots are not seated all the way or the spark plugs are not fully threaded in, you could also get poor ignition.
