Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2013 Kia Optima LX

Published 10/08/2014

Question:

If I were to install this hitch on my 2013 Kia Optima LX What is the biggest size trailer I can pull? Also how much of a load can the wiring handle? 4-running lights plus stop and turn signal? 6,8,10 running lights plus stop and turn signals? etc? Thank You!

Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24965 is rated for 2,000 pound gross trailer weight and 200 pounds tongue weight. However, you will need to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine the capacity of the 2013 Kia Optima. Whichever is lower, the hitch or the vehicle, is the capacity you will need to go by.

You will need the proper ball mount. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. Different wiring harnesses have different capacities. Tow Ready harness # 118453 is rated for 2.1 amps per side for brake lights and turn signals and 7.5 amps total for running lights.

Curt harness # C56058 is rated for 3 amps per side brake and turn signal and 5 amps for running lights.

The amount lights these harnesses can run also depends on if the lights are incandescent or LED. LED lights draw a fraction of the power that incandescent lights draw so you could run more LED lights.

Trailers that weigh up to 2,000 pounds would likely have 2 stop/tail/turn lights and up to 4 side marker/clearance lights and the harnesses would work just fine with that many lights.
