Longer Weight Distribution Shank Recommendation To Clear Tailgate On 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Updated 05/22/2020 | Published 10/02/2014

Question:

I have a Reese 54970 shank and need more length to open my tailgate. The Reese 3214 will give me the extra length I need. Will it be a correct replacement? I see you also sell Curt products. Will a Curt 17103 shank also work as a replacement to gain 1.5inch in length?

The Reese Weight Dist Shank, part # RP3214, measures 14 inches long and has a 5-3/4 inch rise and 2-1/4 inch drop when used with a round bar system. If you have a trunnion-bar system, this shank has a 7 inch rise and a 1-1/4 inch drop. This would be a good replacement for the part # RP54970, you have.

This shank has a tongue weight capacity of 1,400 lbs. I have attached a product review video for this shank you can check out.

I have a 2012 F-150. My current hitch extension (Curt 45795) indicates using it will reduce my tongue weight by half. My rated max is 500lbs, so my max is 250lbs with it. My goal is to drive with my tailgate down; my motorcycle or ATV in the back while I tow a small travel trailer. Using a properly mounted weight distribution hitch, will extended shanks such as this one also reduce me tongue weight, or, allow me to stick with my current rating? Thank you in advance.

A longer weight distribution shank won't reduce your hitch's capacity or affect the performance of a WD system in any way. You won't be able to continue using your existing Curt extender with a WD system installed, but hopefully you can gain enough clearance with something longer like the 18" # EQ90-02-4600.
