How to Charge the Battery On a Hydraulic Dump Trailer

Published 02/17/2010

Question:

Hi. I have a 7 way round trailer connector on my truck and trailer. The trailer is a dump trailer that operates off a battery. I was wondering if there is a way to set up the aux power wire to charge the battery for the hydraulic pump on the trailer when hooked to the truck, or bypass the battery altogether and run the hydraulic pump off the aux power wire?

I would not try to run the hydraulic pump directly off of the vehicles wiring. The amperage draw would be much higher than recommended for the vehicles wiring and the size of wire.

You should be maintaining the pumps battery through the power wire in the 7-Way connector, post # 4. If you do not have a 12 volt wire hooked to the positive post of the pumps battery you can run one from the power connection inside the trailer side 7-Way (see wiring page) or splice into the wire from this connection. This connection will maintain the trailers battery when you are connected to the vehicle and the vehicle is running. You will want to make sure that you do not run the hydraulic pump too much without the vehicle running or the vehicle battery could be discharged along with the trailer battery.
