Interior Trailer Lighting Not Working on a Feather Light Gooseneck Trailer with 6-Way Connector

Updated 02/17/2010 | Published 02/16/2010

Question:

I have a Featherlite goose neck with a 6 point connector. I had a shop in stall a 6 point connector in my bed. All the running and brake lights work as well as the elect. brake. The Interior lights will not thought. I ran a line straight from the battery to the center pin. When I plug the connector in it will blow the 30amp fuse I installed. When I replace the fuse with the connector still plugged in the light will then work. How do I fix this?

Blowing a fuse is usually the result of a direct short somewhere. Since you are not blowing the fuse after you plug in the trailer connector, it leads me to believe that you have a short that is making connection when you are plugging the connector in and is not shorted when the plug is not being pushed into the socket. I would try investigating both of the connectors and make sure that all of the wiring is secure and there are no wires bare inside the connectors that can be touched together when the connection is being made.

If that does not solve the problem you may have a short somewhere on the trailer side of the connector. There could be wires inside the harness leading to the trailer that are frayed or partially broken and when you are plugging in the connector the wires are moved to a shorted position. When the wiring is relaxed, it is returning to a position that breaks the short. You may need to replace the 6-Way wiring harness on the trailer to solve this issue. We have the 6-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 4 foot, item # 50-61-104.
