Expert Reply:
The type of 7-way on your 2006 Toyota Tundra can vary depending on whether it was factory installed or part of an aftermarket installation. You can check the rear of the 7-way to see if it has a round U.S. Car Connector at the rear, held in place with two locking tabs. If so, the Hopkins Smart Hitch system will simply plug in in-line with that connector to access the ground and reverse light circuits that activate the camera.
If you do not have a detachable connector, you'll need to identify and splice into the wires for the ground and reverse circuits. A circuit tester like # PTW2993 is the best way to confirm the function carried on any given wire. Wire colors are sometimes an indicator of functions, white being ground and purple being reverse commonly, but there is no guarantee as wire colors are NOT fully standardized. Please refer to the linked video to see how the tester is used.
