Need to put a boat on top of my car that is about 53 inches wide...curios if the foam pads can stay at 45 inches while the bar extends to the whole 60 inches? Thanks

I have a solution for you, but the Darby Universal Roof Rack part # DTA968 would not be the best choice for carrying a 53 inch wide boat on the roof of your 2014 Mazda 3 4 door.
You will want a custom roof rack and a boat carrier designed to fit said roof rack and carry your boat.
You will want the following products to install a custom roof rack with crossbars long enough to accommodate your boat width.
Thule Aero 60 inch crossbars # TH711520
Thule Rapid Traverse Foot Pack part # TH710501
Thule Roof Rack Fit Kit part # TH145002
For a carrier to attach your boat to the roof rack I would recommend the Thule Portage part # TH819.
Check the vehicle owners manual for the roof capacity and be sure not to exceed this figure.
