Choosing the Right Ball Size and Drop for a BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount

Published 10/16/2026

Question:

I'm looking at the BTBRV InstaLatch ball mounts but see several different versions. I have a couple of trailers with different couplers and I'm not sure which one I need. Are the weight ratings different between the 2-inch and 2-5/16-inch balls?

Hey Eric! All six BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mounts have the same 10,000 lb towing capacity and 1,000 lb tongue weight capacity. The difference is the ball size and amount of drop, so you'll want to match the ball to your trailer's coupler and choose the drop that keeps your trailer level.

We have the following available:

-BTBRV InstaLatch - 2" Drop # BTBRV006 (2" Ball) or # BTBRV009 (2-5/16" Ball)

-BTBRV InstaLatch - 4" Drop # BTBRV007 (2" Ball) or # BTBRV010 (2-5/16" Ball)

-BTBRV InstaLatch - 6" Drop # BTBRV008 (2" Ball) or # BTBRV011 (2-5/16" Ball)

All six fit a 2" receiver and have the same quick-release design, so you can easily remove the ball mount without dealing with a separate hitch pin.

If you don't need any rise or drop and want both ball sizes in one, we also have the BTBRV InstaLatch Dual Ball Mount # BTBRV012. This has the 2" and 2-5/16" balls, so you can switch between trailers without needing separate ball mounts.

I also recommend the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 to eliminate movement in the receiver, along with the etrailer Lock # e39PR if you want to lock the ball mount in place.

What kind of trailers are you towing?

One trailer uses a 2" ball and the other uses a 2-5/16" ball. If they need different drops, would the dual-ball version still work?

@Eric Not unless both trailers can be towed level with the straight shank. The dual-ball # BTBRV012 is convenient for switching ball sizes, but it doesn't provide any rise or drop. If your trailers need different heights, I'd recommend separate InstaLatch mounts or an adjustable ball mount.
