I have linked the instructions for Curt trailer hitch # C13102 for your 2008 Mercedes GL450. The first 2 steps involve lowering the exhaust. It is actually easy. You just have to remove the metal muffler hangers from the rubber hangers (4 total). On some models you would also have to remove the exhaust tips to lower the exhaust. There are screws holding on the tips that would have to be removed in order to slide off the exhaust tips. I have linked the instructions to the right.
You mentioned adding a bike rack later. If you can tell me how many bikes you want to carry I can make a recommendation for you. Please note that the trailer hitch warranty says to use a stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch with a non-trailer load such as a bike rack.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring use # 46255.
