Question:

I’m flat towing a heavier pickup behind my motorhome. Should I go with the 12,000 lb Ultra-Fab tow bar instead of the 8,000 lb one?

Hi Alan! For a heavier pickup, I’d lean toward the 12,000 lb Ultra-Fab tow bar as long as it matches your base plates. If you have Roadmaster base plates, that would be # UF45XR. If you have Blue Ox base plates, that would be # UF95XR. If you have some other brand of base plates, one of these will likely still work, you just may need an adapter.

The 8,000 lb versions, # UF35XR for Roadmaster and # UF55XR for Blue Ox, are a good fit for a lot of dinghy vehicles, Jeeps, and midsize SUVs. Once you get into full-size trucks, especially with fuel, cargo, accessories, or a topper in the mix, the 12,000 lb version gives you a much better capacity cushion.

Just make sure your motorhome hitch and the vehicle manufacturer’s flat towing instructions also support the setup. The tow bar rating is only one piece of the system. What pickup are you planning to tow, Alan?
