Front and Rear Suspension Enhancements for 2006 Chevy Kodiak C5500

Updated 05/05/2026 | Published 05/01/2026

Question:

I’d appreciate your expertise on two questions for my Kodiak C5500 RV: For my Firestone Ride-Rite system, which specific air bags do you recommend as the proper replacements for the 6781 6957 Firestone Ride Rite Air Bags rear bags? 2. What options do you provide for installing front air bags on the same RV, and what would be involved in that upgrade? 3. Also, could you recommend any leaf spring upgrades that would give a slightly higher ride and a smoother feel I have bigger wheels than OEM? Thanks in advance for your guidance. Best, Shannon

Hi Shannon,

To replace your Firestone air bag system, the only confirmed air bag kit for your 2006 Chevy Kodiak is the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs part # AL57292. This system is rated for up to 5,000lbs, has 2-ply reinforced rubber and Zytel nylon endcaps to resist wear and corrosion, and will mount to existing attachment points on your frame with some drilling required. It also has a lifetime warranty to back it up!

We don't offer any air bags for the front axle at this time because air bags are most commonly used for leveling loads and dealing with squat that's created by hauling heavy loads on the rear axle. For the front axle, I recommend using the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs for Front Axle part # SSF-281-47. The SumoSprings are rated for 1,500lbs which is ideal for the front axle because a system that is rated too highly on the front axle would make any bump or curb a really bumpy ride. SumoSprings are a solid urethane design, so you'll never need to check them for leaks or adjust any pressure to get a smooth ride. They also easily install to your frame without any drilling needed!

In regard to upgrading your leaf springs, the leaf spring upgrade kits we have for your 2006 Chevy Kodiak C5500 install directly over the factory leaf springs. The AirLift air bag has brackets that mount to the frame and the leaf springs so it wouldn't be possible to install a leaf spring upgrade because it wouldn't have clearance with the air bag installed.

Have you considered an anti-sway bar if you're having issues with driving stability?
