Towing 3200 lb Trailer With Toyota Sienna with 3500 lb Tow Rating

Updated 07/08/2020 | Published 01/11/2010

Question:

I bought a 19 foot hybrid trailer weighing about 3300 pounds travel weight and a tongue weight of about 380 pounds. Im using a Honda Ridgeline now but considering a 2010 Toyota Sienna with All-Wheel-Drive. I see on Toyotas website that this van has a towing capacity of 3500 pounds but Im more concerned with the tongue weight. Would a distribution hitch make it possible to use this van to tow my trailer?

In instances where the hitch itself has a lower tongue weight rating than the vehicle, using weight distribution can add more capacity up to the vehicle manufacturers limit. Since the vehicle manufacturer states that the tongue weight capacity maxes out at 350 pounds (10 percent of towing capacity) I cannot recommend exceeding that.
I would recommend choosing a vehicle with a greater tow rating. Towing at or just below the maximum rating can be rough on a vehicle and shorten its life span.

Are you asking if you can tow a Toyota Yaris with your Sienna? Capacity-wise, it shouldn't be an issue because the Yaris only weighs around 2,300 pounds. I would check the owner's manual for this vehicle though for any restrictions with regards to towing it with a dolly - some vehicles cannot be towed with any tires on the ground.
