Troubleshooting 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 where Trailer Lights Only Work When Headlights are On

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 09/17/2025

Question:

Question: Good day. I have a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X. Vin no: 3GTUU9EL6NG541392. My trailer brake and indicator lights work until I turn the vehicle lights on. Do you have a product that can solve my problem? Let me know if you require more info. Thanks asked by: Racois U Expert Reply: This is a pretty common problem and the issue is that your trailer wiring has an insufficient ground currently which is preventing the lights from being able to draw enough to function when the headlights are on. So what you need to do is first try cleaning the pins of your trailer wiring connector as that will most likely fix the problem or if not you can run wire back from the grounds of the assemblies up to the main ground harness of the trailer. I have tried this and it is definitely not the grounding. I believe the problem is that the LED lights on my trailer doesnt draw enough current and therefore the car doesnt sense it. Any other solutions would be greatly appreciated

Hey Racois, I do have something you can try with the # 20142. This is normally used on German vehicles that don't like trailers that have LED taillights. With that said I looked into this and a couple recommendations to try are go in and delete all the trailer profiles you have in your truck's system. If that doesn't work we've been told you can have the trailer control module changed by a dealer.

Hey Racois, did deleting the trailer profiles or using the adapter help with your Sierra’s trailer light issue? Knowing what worked might help others dealing with LED trailer lights that don’t draw enough current.
