Can A 2016 Chevy Traverse Tow A 3,800lb Trailer Safely?

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/01/2025

Question:

Im worried, my brother in law has a 2016 chev. Traverse that is equipped with a trailering package. He is about to purchase a 2026 trailer that has a dry weight of 3800lbs and is 24ft long. He says his traverse is capable of pulling this trailer through the mountains. What do you think.

Hey Scott,

As long as he doesn't exceed the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle he will have no issues. I did some research and it looks like that vehicle has a 5,200lb towing capacity. Now I would recommend him checking the owners manual for his specific vehicle, but it looks like he should have no issues towing that trailer. Just keep in mind that maximum capacity and as long as it doesn't exceed it he will be fine.

Depending on the ride he may want to go with a weight distribution hitch if he experiences any sway when towing.

Hey Scott, Did your brother-in-law find the owner's manual helpful in confirming the towing capacity of his Traverse? I'm curious to know if he decided to use a weight distribution hitch for the ride, as it might help with any sway issues. Your experience could really help others in a similar situation.
