Roof Rack And Ladder Rack Recommendation For A 2017 Toyota Tacoma 5 Foot Bed

Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 05/19/2025

Question:

I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab with a 5-foot bed. It currently has a bed liner but no bed cover or roof racks. Im looking for solutions that would allow me to install one or two tall possibly adjustable bed racks, along with a roof rack, to carry long lumber and my 18-foot canoe. What would you recommend?

Hey Don,

We have a great adjustable ladder rack option for your vehicle. I recommend the # TH500XT-XK4, Thule Xsporter Pro, is a great no drill installation ladder rack for you. It has a 450lb capacity for any of your lumber or canoe, as well as height adjustment anywhere from 6-34". The adjustable height is going to be great to allow you to match where your roof rack would sit for those longer loads like the canoe. A great feature for what you are wanting to haul is the included load stops. These adjust side to side and act as a wall to hold your load in place. Whether it be lumber or your canoe it is going to add that additional support, keeping the load safe and secure.

For a roof rack option it depends on if you have a naked roof or factory raised rails. If you have a naked roof I recommend # TH22QG, a solid Thule roof rack system. This is going to be fixed a roof rack as we do not have adjustable options for your vehicle, but it is still going to be a good option for you, and be able to work well with the ladder rack. If your truck does have factory raised rails on it you are going to want to go with # Y57SD, which is a Yakima system that is going to use those raised rails to install.

What kind of roof do you have currently on your Tacoma?

Hey Don, did you have a chance to decide on a roof rack for your Tacoma? I'm eager to know how it all worked out for you, as it could really help others looking to carry similar loads.
