Should The Reese Friction Sway Control Kit 83660 Be Mounted At Angle?

Updated 09/26/2025 | Published 05/04/2025

Question:

Hello, my sway control friction bar is at an angle. Can I mount the small ball on the hitch upside down to make it level or would that be dangerous? Also is it being at an angle dangerous? Its about a 3 inch difference in height from hitch ball to tongue ball.

Hello Mike, thanks for reaching out. The friction sway control bar like part # 83660 should be as level as possible. Otherwise you run the risk of it binding up or failing.

Using the small ball upside down would not be safe though. It is not designed to hang off the ball like so that would not be recommended.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Hey Mike, did you find a way to level your sway control bar safely? I'm asking because your experience could help others facing a similar issue.
