Is the Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Rack with Backbone Mounting System # RR94CP Pioneer 5 or 6?

Updated 03/25/2025 | Published 03/17/2025

Question:

Hello, I am looking for the Rhino Rack Platform Pioneer 6 for my 2012 Jeep JK 2 door. I wanted to confirm this product is the Pioneer 6 and not the older Pioneer 5. Also, does this package come with the RCL or the RLT600 Quick Release Legs. Thanks, Chris

Hello Chris,

Great questions!

I’ve attached a picture showing the Rhino-Rack part numbers included with the Pioneer Platform Rack and Backbone Mounting System – 51" Long x 56" Wide # RR94CP. I was able to confirm that platform part number 62111F is indeed the Pioneer 6 model.

The kit comes with RCL legs, which are the fixed, locking type, not the quick release RLT600 legs.

If you’d prefer the quick release legs, let me know! While we don’t currently have that kit pre-bundled, I’d be happy to provide the correct part numbers to put that setup together.

Also, just out of curiosity what’s the main purpose or intended use for the platform?

Hi Kate, thank you for the info. Definitely going to want the quick release RLT600 legs. Main purpose is I am outfitting my 2012 Jeep JK 2 door for beach camping. Looking to add a rooftop tent and a 270 awning. Links below. Not sure how much weight the pioneer 6 can hold but I think I should be ok correct? Tent weighs approximately: 120lbs and Awning approximately: 30lbs Bundu 2 Cantilever Hard Shell Roof Top Tent, Grey Body & Green Rainfly: HD Nomadic 270 LTE -driver side:

@ChrisC Hey Chris, I hopped on Rhino-Rack’s website and used their Load Rating Calculator, looks like with the Pioneer Platform Rack with Backbone # RR34CP (this is the right kit with the quick-release RLT600 legs), your 2012 Jeep JK 2-door will have the following load capacities: - On-road: 165 lbs - Off-road: 110 lbs - Static (parked): 245 lbs The rack itself weighs 55 lbs, and that’s already subtracted from the numbers above. So your 150 lbs of gear while driving will be totally fine, as long as you’re sticking to pavement. If you plan to go off-road with that load, it’s getting close to the limit. I used the 300 lb static roof capacity I found online when inputting into the calculator, but it’s worth double-checking your owner’s manual to see if Jeep confirms that number. Also, that tent is awesome! Yakima was just here a couple of weeks ago, and it looks super similar to the one they brought. Same goes for the awning, really reminds me of the Batwing. Very cool setup you're building! Do you have your first big trip planned once it’s all installed? Would love to hear where you’re headed!
