Troubleshooting a Reese Brakeman Brake Controller That Only Works In Manual Override

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/10/2025

Question:

I bought a 2004 Silverado 3500 with a Reese Brakeman Compact installed. The red light previously came on while applying the brake pedal, however now it only comes on when I slide the manual brake. Is the controller bad or is this more likely an issue with the connections/ground?

Hey Mike thanks for stopping in! It could be a number of things, honestly, so the best thing you could do is check everything. Most likely it's a wiring issue, so I'd suggest checking all of the wires for any loose wires. You'll also want to check for any shorts, broken wires, and bad grounds.

If all that looks fine, and you're getting the appropriate voltage, then the issue is going to be with the controller and it would need to be replaced with something like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness # TK99HR.

If there is anything else I can help you with, please feel free to drop a comment and let me know!

Hey Mike, how did things turn out with the Reese Brakeman Compact on your Silverado? Did checking the wiring and grounds solve the issue or did you end up replacing the controller? Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same problem.
