Troubleshooting P3 Brake Controller Install in 2023 Silverado with No Power

Updated 03/12/2025 | Published 03/02/2025

Question:

My order for the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness 3064-P arrived this week for my 2023 Chevy Silverado Z71. This aftermarket brake controller and custom harness was suggested since my factory brake controller does not support electric over hydraulic EOH trailer brakes. When I plug the custom harness 3064-P into the behind the left dash factory electric brake control harness and plugged into the P3, the P3 did not power on. Using a meter I confirmed that 0 volts between the BLACK/Battery + pin and the WHITE/Ground - on the connector. I did get 12V+ reading between the RED/Stoplight pin and the WHITE/Ground - when I applied the brake so the Stoplight brake circuit is working. Both of the under the hood 30A trailer related fuses 63 and 84 are good. NOTE: I have not yet run the a separate Trailer Brake Control Output wire to the 7-way connector but I dont see how this would be related. 1 Why would the BLACK/Batter + not have power from the behind dash electric brakes control harness? 2 Does this mean I will have to tie into battery power directly and not go thru harness? Pulling out on trip with newly converter DeeMaxx disc brakes and EOH actuator and need to get this working. Thanks, Tim

Hey Tim, that is odd that your wiring isn't active but what you can do is run a wire directly to the battery like you said or you could grab the power wire from the integrated controller and run it to the black wire of the P3. If you decide to go with the battery route you'll want to use 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 through a breaker like part # 9510.

What are the wire colors (2023 Chevy Silverado) for the behind the dash factory electric brake controller harness adapter that the 3064-P wiring harness plugs into?

@TimO If you pull up the install instructions that are linked you can see in picture A the connector you are looking for. I can see a green wire, yellow wire, brown, purple, red, white. When you look into the opening of the connector there's a bright red part that should be pretty easy to see.
