Can The Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler BD028444 Be Bolted On?

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/18/2025

Question:

My boat trailer has a standard bolt on hitch for 2inch ball. 3inch galvanized rectangular tube bolted with 2- 1/2inch dia. stainless bolts, spaced 3inch apart. I would like to switch to the bulldog collar-lock style. Can I purchase the bull dog collar style, drill the holes to bolt on the hitch verses welding? TIA

Hello Billy, thanks for reaching out. Technically, yes, you could drill a few holes in the sides of the coupler and bolt it to your trailer tongue. The Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028444 is designed to be welded on though, so in order to have the full 12,500 lb capacity, it would need to be welded on all edges that will be touching the frame of the trailer. Otherwise you get into unknown capacity by just bolting it on.

Can I ask why you want to switch to the Collar lock style? Are you unhappy with the current coupler/latch? If so, my preferred coupler is the Demco eZ-latch like part # DM13689-52. This has a 10K capacity and can be bolted on using the same 3" bolt spacing. The ez-latch is super durable. Just thought Id throw that out there.

Reply below and let me know what you think, or if there is anything else I can do to help.

Hey Billy, how did things go with your trailer coupler swap? Did you end up going with the Bulldog Collar-Lok or the Demco eZ-Latch option your teammate mentioned? Knowing what worked might help others looking to upgrade their hitch setup.
