Question:

Will this roof bag attach to 30inch wide crossbars? This is for my 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid with factory crossbars.

Hey Mary,

The Rightline Gear 4x4 Duffel Bag # RL100J87-B doesn't have a way to mount to crossbars and would be better in a roof basket or hitch mounted cargo carrier. If you're needing a smaller box able to mount with a 30" crossbar spread then you could go with the Inno Ridge Rooftop Cargo Box # INBRA220R-BK.

This cargo box offers 8 cubic feet of space and is compatible with round, square, aero, elliptical, and most factory crossbars. The feet can fit 3/4" to 1-3/8" tall x 1" to 3-1/2" wide crossbars. I've attached a short video below where Rob will show you its features.

Thank you. Are roof baskets easy to remove when not in use? If so, can you recommend one that would fit with 30" crossbars? I tried the Inno Ridge and it doesn't fit 30" crossbars. I see that the diagram was changed. It used to be 19-28" which I believe is accurate. I really liked that box but it didn't fit. Have you tried that box on 30" factory crossbars? Another reason I believe 28" max is correct is that in one of the videos, the box was installed on a Jeep with 28" crossbars and the women doing the demo indicated that it was a tight fit at 28" so it seems unlikely that 30" would work. I talked to someone who contacted the manufacturer and the manufacturer said they didn't know!!

@Mary You'd honestly be shocked with how little info you can get out of manufacturers. All these product pages start with manufacturer info and then once we finally get our hands on the product we can test and play around with each item and correct any info as needed. I watched the video you're referring to and I understand the misconception now. I believe the cargo box was intended to be mounted with square or round-style bars crossbars. Aero-style crossbars are much wider and eat up some of the 30" mount space, so you're correct that with aero-style crossbars the maximum spread would be 28" and we'll need to find an alternative. Is there a desired size for cargo box? I don't want to recommend something too big just to fit that spread. A roof basket would likely be a bit easier to remove/reinstall just because it's open but then you lose your protection from weather and any debris that could potentially hit your cargo. Yakima has it listed that from the center of the front crossbar back to the open hatch door on your Corolla Cross is 55-1/2" so we'll want to make sure we stay under that length. The Yakima MegaWarrior Large Roof Rack Cargo Basket # Y07080 would be a suitable option at 52" long x 48" wide.

@KevinC I'd like to stay with a smaller box because my roof weight capacity is low - 75lbs according to Toyota. I liked the Inno Ridge because it was only 20 lbs giving me plenty of remaining weight. Plus, it's light enough that I can handle it. I agree with your point about protecting stuff from elements. My first choice is a hard-sided rooftop box but I've had so much trouble fitting my crossbars with a lightweight box that I'm looking at any option to get me extra cargo room. I've even thought of removing my crossbars and getting a "smaller" pair but I don't know if that would really solve anything since I have fixed mounting points. Any suggestions your have are much appreciated.

@Mary The Trunx Rooftop Cargo Carrier - 9 cu ft # TRX44FR is going to be the only small option that can be adjusted to fit a 30" crossbar spread. New holes can be drilled into the bottom of the box increasing the spread up to 30" and the box itself is only 46-5/8" in length so you'd still be able to open the rear hatch fully. The only drawback is that the material the box is made of isn't as thick as others on the market so it won't feel as strong and some reviews say that the hinge hardware isn't the best, which is a valid concern. I've attached a video below where Zach will show you the box in use and give you a better idea on its quality. Other than the Trunx the only other alternative would be to go with a larger box and not be able to fully open the hatch or switch to a hitch mounted cargo box. If you switch to a larger box I would check the capacity of the roof and if rated high enough would swap out the factory crossbars to higher capacity aftermarket ones to hold more weight. If you want to go with a hitch-mounted box then you'd need a 2" trailer hitch like part # DT28GR and a cargo box like the Inno # IN94MR we talked about in your previous question.
